Ok, so my rat snake has a resperatory infection from all the signs I've seen, and I'm now worried my ball python has one since her cage is sitting under the rat snake's cage. I've called the vet her and htey'll see a snake for $20, but they wouldn't say how much the treatment for a resperatory infection would be. Anyone have any ideas before I get myself in there and the guy wants $200 for treating my snake? Thanks.

Her breathing was "bubbly" today so I took her in and the $80 bill turned into $50 when he found out I was a student. She's on antibiotics and doing well. He recomended I let the rat snake go after looking at her. He said her condition was quite bad and to let her "go on her own" so we'll see. But Petunia is going to be fine!

i think letting the rat snake go on its own is a death sentence to it. i dont mean to jump on you here, but if you keeping it in captivity is the reason for the infection, you should probably try and get it in good health before letting it loose. maybe the vet would work something out with you in order to pay the cost.

The cost isn't the issue, he thinks that it is beyond help. Aparently, he said that the Ball must have caught it from the rat snake, and since my apartment has been colder than usual, it probably set the rat snakes' infection in motion. Needless to say I feel like a pile of poo and it's a hard lesson learned, but a lesson learned nonetheless. Let's hope no more are learned in this fashion.

Bzzttt!! Yes, the ball might have caught it from the rat, but it COULD be the other way around. Whatever you do, don't go releasing that ratsnake that MIGHT have an exotic infection into the wild. Put it down or have the vet do it.

I agree with Larry. There is WAY too much of a risk of introducing some exotic disease into the local wild populations. I wouldn't necessarily put the rat down just yet...and I'm curious how bad this RI could be for the vet to recommend just letting it die...sounds a bit extreme to me and against most vets' accepted mottos. My advice, get the vet to give you some cheap antibiotics, baytril or the like, and keep the rat warm and comfortable. You may notice a remarkable recovery. Same for the ball. Your snakes shouldn't be spreading diseases around to each other if you use proper handling procedures. Don't handle one and then immediately handle another, and try not to use the same tools (i.e., hook) on them without washing it or wiping it down with a disinfectant between uses. These tips could go a long way in preventing a headache for you.

Sorry It's been so long since I got back to the boards. I had to move back to Houston for the winter break. I should update ya'll that I took the rat to a vet in houston and he said the abilene vet was nuts. He said she could be fine and she is now on the same 10-day regiment as the ball and expected to make a full recovery. Thanks for ya'lls concern and incite. It's always apreciated!
