hey Mr. O'Shea i live in Grady County Oklahoma. and i have been having trouble finding venomous snakes in my area. i couldn't find any live or dead on the roads at night. but i also don't know where to look, i would like to catch rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths but i have no idea where to look.I live in grady county oklahoma. so my questions are:where can i look to find copperheads, rattlesnakes, and cottonmouths during the winter, summer, fall, and spring? thats my only problem.finding snakes. i can catch snakes just fine i can carefully and safely handle a snake, of any kin, well maybe not an anaconda or a python but you catch my drift.
thank you Mr. O'Shea

You more than likely won't find anything from Nov. to Mid March unless you find a den site on a warm sunny day. It looks like you live near the Washita Mountain range which has some great snakes. I have found plenty of broadband copperheads just cruising the roads that are in wild areas. Western diamondbacks are in that area as well as massasaugas and prairies are futher to the west. You will need a permit of some sorts if you are going to collect. I have a scientific collectors permit and I'm pretty sure you will need some sort of liscense as well.
Also, if you plan on keeping the animals you MUST have a Non-Commercial Breeders license issued by the Department of Wildlife Conservation. Otherwise it is illegal to keep any venomous reptile in the state of Oklahoma without one. I would reccomend just photographing them in the wild and letting them go again. All of the species found in Oklahoma can be purchase captive bred and they are not expensive by any means. It would be silly to steal from the wild when you can buy a cb animal for cheap.
Good luck.

If you wish to keep the various species of snakes in your area I suggest purchasing captive bred specimens. They are readily available and tend to make superior terrarium subjects. I support collecting snakes to add genetic diversity to existing breeding programs, but that's really it.
The heighth of spring is the best time to be out observing (March, April, May) as temperatures are climbing. During the warmer summer months the snakes become nocturnal, and your best option is road cruising. Seeing the snakes in their environment is the real treat. It's best to leave them be. Anytime someone collects an adult female (of anything) it negatively impacts the ecosystem she lives in.
Sorry not O'shea, I'm
