I'm not going to do your homework for you, but I will help you and guide you. Crotalus is a beta neuro(PLA2). If you want the species with the beta, look into Swiss-Prot and do your work. If you need help from here, I'll try, but I'm not going to to your homework. Snakes can have many neuro-fractions and many other protein fractions. Do your work. Tim

Let's do this, I will give you a example, then in the future you'll be able to find any type of toxin you want. First you have to get into Swiss-Prot(www.expasy.ch/sprot/sprot-top.html), then you can scroll down and do a full text search of SP and Trembl. Next, scroll down too the search box and enter the name you are looking for. Let's use Crotalus durissus terrificus, type this in and enter it. This will show you a list of protein fractions and you can click on each one for a good overview, or you could order a doc. through your library. Go down to PA2b and click on it, this is crotoxin from terrificus, the neurotoxic fraction(beta neuro). Now you're well on your way to study any of the 500 plus venomous ophidians. This should limit your Q's in the future. Some snake won't be listed, not characterized yet, or partially characterized. Good luck, Tim

Well, what Crotalus have primarily neuro-toxic venoms? BGF's website would have something of this. I know that there are localities of C. horridus, I believe, which have strongly neuro-toxic protiens. You might check a post that I did some time ago on this forum about the Digestive Function of Venom.
Cheers

Long time no talk. The big hitters are durissus and scutulatus, but different geo local with determine the stronger fraction of beta neuro, with both. I'm sure some of the 29/30 might have certain betas, but their not characterized as of yet. Heck, they might even contain some alphas(short, or long). A lot of work and no time. Yes, Bryan's site is a great source w/ this type of stuff. C ya Rog, Tim

I am quite sure that the venom of the Canebrake rattler (Crotalus horridus atricaudatus) has neurotoxic properties, while that of the nominate species (C. horridus horridus) does not. I think that the Tiger rattler(Crotalus tigris) also has neurotoxins, but double check on that one. Of course C. scutulatus and C. durissus ssp. are the main rattlers that come to mind when speaking of neurotoxins, as the others have mentioned.

Yes Mark, from what I hear that's true. I'm not sure on the facts though. I've heard some others might be in that cat. also. Time will tell and I can't wait. C ya, Tim

From my understanding, there are some localities of CaneBrakes that are quite neurotoxic, and the Mojave is supposed to be pretty Nasty as well.
