Bushmasters are NOT Bothrops! They are Lachesis and the last I read were still considered to be closer related to Crotalus than Bothrops.

OI!!!
Eye-lash viper is not Bothrops, but Bothriechis.
Same goes for the Honduran palm viper.
What makes them so special...............THEY LOOK SO DAMN PRETTY!!!
B.schlegeli is considered as nothing special any more here in Europe, this does not mean that it is not very beautiful. It is actually being bred in very large numbers.
Honduran relative of the previously mentioned taxon is very much sought after by all hobbyists interested in husbandry of arboreal viperids. This actually goes for the whole Bothriechis genus excluding schlegeli.
What it comes to the rest of the Neo Tropical Viperids, I'm not qualified to comment on them too much. I do find them quite interesting too, Lachesis especially.
Oh, and do not forget genus Bothriopsis. Lots of interesting species. Bilineata especially (personally biased opinion!!!).
If you are not interested yet.......you will be when you learn more about them.
Stay safe!
Cheers,
Mikko

I believe there are several good reasons. (1). The Bothrops genus consists of a large variety of species that fluxuates between high 30s & low 40s within the genus. (2). They tend to be quite frisky critters and come in all sorts of beautiful patterns . (3) The large species for example: B. asper, B. atrox, B. jararaca, B. jararacussu & B. lanceolatus, possess a nasty attitude(strike at anything/won't give ground when encountered), utilize a potent venom in large quantities, thus, making them quite dangerous and interesting serpents.
