My favorites would have to be:
Mark O'Shea: I love his show because he always has a quest that has some scientific purpose, he shows the audience a few things about real scientific research, and NEVER stages anything. Mark O'Shea doesn't have titles like "Panama" where he goes to a country and whatever he finds is gravy. He goes for a specific purpose and on occasion fails to find what he is looking for. It is field herping in its rawest form. He also doesn't just go by himself and do the "look at me, look at me". He almost always has an expert herpetologist with him and assists the expert in the field in the experts area of study. He is an actual herpetologist and has done extensive research before he got his own show. I love it and think it is great, but I can see where the average American wouldn't be too fond of it. Sure is nice to see someone catch a species that isn't on tv or in non-scientific books constantly. I enjoy learning more about herps, not listening to someone talk about basic info on a species everyone knows about.
Steve Irwin: used to love his shows but now that he is doing constant crocodile and zoo shows I am not as interested. Still like him and his older shows though.
Brady Barr: I have a lot of respect for his education and background. He got his master's and Ph.D at the University of Miami under Jay Savage and did some great alligator work in the Everglades. He can come off as a little less adventurous but he isn't as much of a risk taker, neither are most academic herpetologists. I like his shows.
Bryan Fry: Excellent stuff when I see him on tv, though rarer these days.
Thomas Eimermacher: Did a good job on snake wranglers. I enjoyed the Storm's water cobra episode a lot.
Jim Harrison: Still can't find his snake wranglers episode on tv, dang it. Heard good things though.
Jeff Corwin: Funny conservationist guy. I enjoy it though it is less of a herp show.
Nigel Marvin: Not a fan. I don't dislike him but do find him annoying. Haven't been able to watch his show long enough to form an opinion
Austin Stevens: used to like him before his animal planet shows. Doesn't know what he is talking about and lies about his photography. He is using a Sigma 17-35mm wide-angle lens that has a minimum focusing distance of 19.5" and gets less than 2 inches from the snake and pretends to take a picture. He is in it for his own reputation not science or teaching.
Can think of few others right now.

I would like him if he didn't eat all his animal props. Every time that barefoot guy sees an animal he talks about it and then takes a big bite out of it, lol! But you are right, he is pretty cool. And there is no "e" at the end of his name, as in Bredl's python (Morelia bredli), named after his dad.

I think one of the earliest and most original was Marty Stouffer who presented, filmed and directed Wild America. Although he examined many different animals, his presentation format was one of the first.
As for Austin Stevens...I personally like him. Yes, I agree with most of the criticisms that he's too showy, that his facts are a bit off, etc. But for the general public that knows very little about snakes, I think Austin does a great job of presenting snakes. He's entertaining, energetic, and really passionate about snakes and wildlife.
