Off hand I think its approx 6000-8000 bites per year, the copperhead causes the most bites while the western diamondback has the reputation as causing the the most severe bites. The Tiger rattle snake has the most potent venom. There are approx 8-12 deaths per year.

The western diamondback kills more people every year. The canebrake or timber rattlesnake has the highest percent mortality rate. The copperheads bites the most people but causes almost no deaths.

Yes they mean the same, but he used them correctly. The western diamondback kills the most per year. The timber rattlesnake has the highest percent mortality. This means that fewer people get bit by the timber rattlesnake but more people die per person bit.
However, I don't know where he got this information because I would think either the Mojave green or Southern Pacific would have a higher mortality percentage, but that is just an educated assumption.

This is true. I would have assumed the southern pacific also. They are such a beautiful but nasty snake.

*7000 snakebites are reported annually in the U.S.
*15 fatalities result placing the survival rate
at 499 out of 500.
*Approximately 3000 are classified as illegitimate
meaning the bite happened while handling or
harrassing the snake.
*85% of natural bites are below the knee.
*50% of bites are dry (no venom is injected).

I know they mean the same thing...so????
The western diamondback kills more people because more people get bit by it. But if you put 100 people in a room and let 50 get bit by a western diamondback and 50 by the canebrake, more people would die by the canebrake bit. So the canebrake doesnt kill AS many people, but it has a higher percent mortality rate. I forgot where I got the info on the canebrake having the highest mortality rate but I remember it being from a good source. Ill look more into it and get back at you.
