Dr. Zoltan Takacs, taught me a simple method of 'flash freezing' venom for temporary transport, by immersing the vials into a bath of pure alcohol(100% ethanol) and dry ice. Mixing the ethanol and dry ice produces a super cold bath at ~100F, and freezes anything that touches it.
You gotta watch your fingers and wear gloves when handling the test tubes or vials, though.

Hi Matt:
Actually that's the preparatory step before it goes into the freeze dryer. The flash frozen sample is just that; frozen and must be transoprted that way. That's the beauty of freeze drying is that once the sample is dried, it can be transported at room temperature.
Best,
Al

Hi! I am a zoo vet in southern Brazil and we too are thinking about venom extraction an lyophilization soon. Bothrops jararaca and B. jararacussu are very abundant in this area and our contact with other institutions alike would certainly make it very easy for the zoo to receive most of the problem animals captured in the whole area. It could yield an important income for the maintenance of the other animals we take care of. If anyone could send the contacts of potential buyers: <mvcdd@yahoo.com>
Thanks a lot!
