Hi
I was going to buy a visions but after reading about them here decided not to(dont want any escapes).
I am now looking at Barrs cages any input on them ? Looking for escape proof and well made, holds heat well.
I use tanks now with screen lids and screen clips but wanted lighter weight cages .
Thanks.

I have not used them, however, looking at the photographs, it seems that the tabs holding the door closed are a little too small for a hot. Just doesn't seem secure enough to me. There's my $.02.

We use Barr cages quite a lot. We first bought 10 4' cages with dividers about a year ago and since then have bought about 25 more, 10 3' cages, two baby rack systems, and one HUGE 8' by 3' by 3' cage that is awesome. We have found them to be lightweight, easy to clean, and well-made. However, since they are made of lightweight plastic there are a few considerations. First, don't stack anything on top of the cages, unless it's another Barr cage that is designed to go on top. I think if a lot of weight was to be put on top they would probably bow over time. Second, they need to be level (if you have a stack) or the doors will stick. The only other reccomendation I would make is that you should ask for larger knobs on the doors if you plan on keeping venomous in them. We keep both elapids and rattlesnakes in ours and have had no problems so far.

Thanks for the great info. Are you able to put something like 60 watt bulb on the top screen or is it plastic?
I wanted the option of using bulb or UTH . I am not familiar with plastic enclosures and not sure if possible.
If so going to order this week. I am looking at the 36 inch long cages.
They wont be stacked . I now use 20 gallon tanks which allow for UTH or top heat and wanted same but bit longer enclosure .
Thanks.

You can put lights on the top but you would need to mount the socket inside- the vents are all cut into the plastic and are not screen. You can also use UTH but need to put them on a thermostat (you probably do anyway-but just to be sure) as the plastic will melt at very high temps. As long as you stay under 100 or so you should be fine. I'm sure Doug can give you the specific heat at which it melts. Also, I would reccomend asking him to vent the cages as much as possible. That way there's good airflow.

I have had Barrs cages for several years and I like them quite a bit. I have used them for tree boas and bush vipers. They are plastic but sturdy and lightweight as well. The top has either a solid top or a screen top. I think that for hots, you could switch out the knobs and put some locks on there no problem. One issue with any plexiglass though is that big humidity differences between the cage and outside will cause the door to warp a little bit but not to where it won't create a good seal. Just that you have to press on the doors a bit to get them to close so that you can latch/turn the knob.
