Georgia Public TV ( WGTV ) will air tonight at 7:00 pm the show "Joy of Snakes", featuring my long time friend Dick Flood ( Okefenokee Joe ). It is a great show that they do not show too often, and it features Venomous Snakes of the South Eastern US. If you have never seen it, it is fun to watch ! Lots of collecting of "Hots". Also, if you like Joe's music, his web site is back up at OkefenokeeJoe.Com It is great road cruising music. Best Regards JohnZ

Shane: It is great that you had a chance to see Joe in Waycross, and to take your kids to see him years later.
Back then, he was doing over 250 lectures a year for schools. He is still doing over 100 talks to schools a year in the South East, and a lot of Native American Indian Pow Wows and Hunting and Fishing Shows.
In the 33 years I have known Joe, I have had the great fortune to have helped produce some of his PBS TV shows, and he used some of my photos and background recordings on his videos and music albums.
Joe is 72 years old now, and still going strong, but he does less shows than he used to. I would encourage anyone who has not met Joe to attend one of his shows sometime if you get a chance.
His shows are a lot of fun for kids and adults alike. And now days, he plays a lot more of his music at his shows than he did in the past.
Best Regards JohnZ

Something you who watched Joy of Snakes might have noticed. That show was shot 17 years ago, and used a lot of natural lighting or a single light on the video camera and a single audio recorder. It resulted in a lot of deep shadows in some of the scenes. Also, the scenes were real, in the field, not staged. At the time, it was state of the art, and earned a Emmy Award.
Now days, when you see Steve Irwin, or Jeff Cowin, or Mark O'shea, with the perfictly lit photos, you have to realize that there are 15 folks in the background with studio lights, microphones and recorders helping with the shots. They often take a snake out of the ice chest where it has cooled and become lethargic, and dump it into the scene, which is all lit up with studio lighting and microphones. Makes for some great TV viewing, but is not exactly a field situation.

After that show they had another show on that was as interesting. It was about venoms and how they can help treat pain, kill cancer, stop bleeding, and help diabetes and other illnesses. It was called the venom cure.

I used to watch Joe as a kid. I loved him. Recently I had been wondering what happened to him. Unfortunately, living in NC now, I can't get GA Public TV. Glad to hear he is doing well. He is one of my earliest inspirations. Is it possible to get videos or DVDs of his shows? I would love to share his experience with my son.

Andrew: I do not know of any of Joe's actual snake shows being available on DVD or Video, but they should be! I will mention that to him sometime soon. Maybee he can add that to his web site.
As a mater of fact, I recorded one of his complete shows at the Atlanta Buck-O-Rama a few years back, on digital video tape, and it probably could be converted to DVD format. I will have to find it and watch it again to see if it is suitable.

You can get Swampwise and Joy of Snakes on VHS. I got mine in Okefenokee. I know you can get them on PBS.org but they are more expensive. I bought mine for 20 bucks a piece and PBS sells them for 30.

When I was about 8 or 10, I saw Joe do a snake show at the park. There were maybe 20 people in the room at the time and I was on the front row. I'll never forget the monster cottonmouth that he pulled out of the box right in front of me. It just so happened that immediately afterward, he was our guide on the boat tour. It was a great visit to the park for me at that age. I will always remember that.
