I have cared for a pair of false water cobras for about 4 years now. The pair I have are very well mannered. They are not pissy, and are quite handleable. I keep them seperately in large enclosures with a small tub which they each use frequntly to soak in. They do have a very aggressive feeding response. At feeding they will strike at anything moving, and will come flying out of the enclosure to feed. Also Venomous Reptiles of the Western Hemisphere has a short paragraph about FWC on page 724 of second volume. It states FWC have enlarged posterior maxillary teeth(there is a picture in book) and a Duvernoy's gland secretion with high proteolytic activity. The text also list damage from bite as mechanical trauma by teeth and strong bite. Also listing local envenomation reactions and possible hypersensitivity reactions. Painful swelling, that may be extensive, persistant and bruising may occur. These symptoms have been observed from prolonged chewing bites. There was one case listed that bite victim experienced 3 episodes of muscle paralysis, however tests showed no medical evidence of said paralysis.
All that being said. I have enjoyed raising my pair. They have grown in to hearty snakes 5-6 feet in lenth. They are active snakes. They do reqire a lot of frequent cage cleanings. They do occationally "hood" in defensive display, although not very often. I am considering breeding them soon so anyone want to chime in with FWC breeding advice.
Thanks,
J.S.

The snake was a 7+ foot male and it took almost 5 mins to get the snake of his hand, it took over a week for all the swelling to go down.

well most of the care info is already in this thread.
safty tips would be to handle them wearing lether gloves and long sleaves, some times i use a snakehook. depending on their mood.

whats a good tank size for a single female FWC?
the tank suggested in an earlier post (6.5'x 2'x 3') seems a bit large for a single snake, but i could be wrong.
thank you

i work at a reptile store and we currently have 3 false water cobras 1.2 proven breeders. im the person that cares for all the reptiles so i work with this type of snake almost evey day. this specie gets pretty big, about 8 ft. they will eat mice or rats. they are rear fanged with verry mild venom, if bitten it will cause swelling and discomfort(like the shot they give you at the dentist to numb your mouth kinda) they are pissy snakes. if handled alot they are a great and fun snake. temp should be around 80F to 85F. they are actualy in the corn snake family, they are colubrids, they got their name because they hood up just a tad like actual cobras, if u have any other questions about em just let me kno and ill answer to the best of my ability
