don't free handle venomous. Use correct tools. These animals do not calm down. Even if they appear to calm down, they WILL still bite sooner or later. Please do not free handle. No one has a calming effect on these animals. Also, even if you do use tools, learn techniques from experienced keepers and don't handle them just to be handleing them. Have a purpose in mind, i.e. cage cleaning meds etc. I try never to handle my animals with tools or otherwise.

I appreciate your comment. I don't think you understand though. I am not like other people. I have always ben able to calm down any animal. It is a gift.
I do not have any snakes now but I will try to catch some. We have Timber Rattlers and one called Massaga.
I would like a Gaboon because I saw one at a show and it was so calm it just sat there and was so relaxed. Even when so young kids tried to irritate it it just remained calm.
If I did get bit I know how to make the cuts and suck out the poison.
Thanks again

Just what we needed to liven things up around here, another "Red Shirt" from Star Trek. I have a Puff Adder you can try it with, if you think you can calm her. After all they're related to Gaboons.

OK snake wisperer. If you can calm a timber rattler I'll personally provide you with much cash. People don't understand. These are striktly instinctive animals. They don't have the ability to learn, have emotions, fetch the paper. These are snakes and have been around for millenium. Their brain is like a spider. Eat to live & mate to reproduce anything outside of that is cause for them to go into fight or flight. Look at some of the photos will you snake sedator. It isn't worth exposing your "gift" on a snake. Try a tarantula or a mean non-hot snake. You'll then have the gift of being a human pin cushion. Don't go down this road - it may encourage others and we will all suffer.
a "calming gift" HELLO!

Howard: While I agree with you that a lot of snakes behavior is instinctive, I would have to dissagree with your statement that "They don't have the ability to learn". Anyone who has worked with King Cobras or Indago Snakes has seen this. Also, snakes like rattlesnakes "learn" the difference between someone opening a cage day after day to clean it, verses opening the cage to feed them. The difference in behavior can be really apparent if you work with the same snakes day after day. Best Regards JohnZ

If he gets bit he gets bit. Ive freehandled plenty of times and have never been bit. Not to say that it cant happen, but if you freehandle just understand the consequences. This "hobby" requires extreme caution. I am not ready to die catching snakes so I quit catching them. I guess you can say that I am afraid. I use to think that I was special and could do anything and never get bitten. I have never been bitten but recently I realized that Im not special. Im just a piece of shit. I had no Idea what I was doing. I will never amount to anything and I should quit while I am ahead. It has been a fun journey but its time for me to stop.

Jeremy: Dont' cut yourself down like that. You never got bitten, due to skill and probably some luck also. And you learned that you dont have to free handle snakes to proove anything. It is good to be somewhat afraid of animals that can kill you !
You are very knowledgeble about reptiles, be proud of that knowledge. There is no need to be so hard on yourself.
Best Regards JohnZ

well you just go ahead and freehandle rattlers but donīt come crying when your fingers, hands or arms have to be amputated. like challenger i also advise you to try your "gift" on a aggressive NON-venomous snake, or a pissed of nilemonitor since your gift works wonders on all kinds of animals.
i dont even freehandle most of my rearfanged snakes exept my heterodonīs.
