Al said it, and I know I've said the same thing in almost the exact same words: religious freehandling of venomous snakes is just about as intelligent an activity as religious Russian Roulette. Hell, shooting yourself in the head would be a much quicker and painless death than being nailed by a puff (or any other hot for that matter).

Regardless of opinions about any subject on this forum, I expect language to be kept clean.
Outbursts of profanity will be removed as will objectionable (mainly sexual content) posts.
Keep it clean.

First his name is Silas Crawford and he is a snake handeling preacher from North Alabama. He own a snake handleing church somewhere in North Alabama. That is their belief and let them believe. Just like everyone else has their own. I know him very well and he is defianetly out there. He has bit now 24 times by venomous snakes. He got bit last year by a Canebrake which almost killed him. Less than two weeks after that picture Silas was bitten by the snake and survived. He did not recieve any anti-venin or anything. It also was not a dry bite. I saw him one week after the bite and his are was very swelled up. Everyone does not need to criticize him for his belief. He also has drunk bleach out of the contanier and other things. But he is does it for his religion. All you do is critize people for free-handleing. He is definatly not the problem with bans. That is red tape that officals can not cross. Even though it was illegal to keep puff adders in AL he still was able because he kept it at the church were they can. Stop Critizing and just accept it. Not everyone wants to use tools. You should just let them do what they want. Isn't this a free country anyways?

The religion is Oneness Pentecostal, This is a very small branch of Pentecostal, They are following the scripture. (And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. —Mark 16:17-18) While there are many ways to show faith. According to the Bible this is one of them. But also the scriptures read in Matthew 4:7 Jesus said unto him, It is written agine, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God. So by these two scriptures they seem to cancel one another out, but I feel that If the persons heart is not to tempt the Lord, following the scipture would be correct.(You cant go wrong by following the Bible) But god did give use good sense to make sound judgements. (well some of us) These people need to realize that they could harm people that wish not to partake in this exersize of faith. example: I dont feel that drinking in moderation is a sin but say you are drinking in public and you are seen by a recovering alcoholic drinking. That could make him/her drink agine so your actions are wrong. So if the people want to handle snakes as a way to show faith well they can do it privatly, and It wouldnt bother me in any way. Who are we to say how a person should show there faith. Because they are clearly within biblical guide lines. Just my opinion.

Philip, I don't just slam anyone I choose to, however if I do, I have a very good reason for doing so. Yes I will slam those who "Free handle". As everyone here knows, I don't keep this a secret that there is absolutely no reason to put your hands on a venomous snake that is still alive and breathing, unless it's unconscious. I can sit back and say that I've checked out this religion...being that my family is from the hills of West Virginia...there are quite a few sects of holy rollers out there that choose to pick up and free handle venomous snakes, along with drinking of strychnine and other dangerous substances. I've actually been to one of these churches and to watch them handle these snakes (most often it was timbers) it left me stunned.
I am entitled to my opinion. Like it or not. You too are entitled to yours.
Jeremy, I didn't take it as sarcasm, but in the same sense I took it as you telling me to check it out before I say something...which above I have pointed out.
I'm not stepping on anyones religion, let them believe, however, when it comes down to something like this that can and has killed in the past or the future, I'm going to say something.
Matt

Let me just point out one more thing here. In the picture, right below his arm, holding the snake, is a hook laying on the bed, so he had a hook but wasn't using it.
Do I need to say more?
Shaking my head ruefully,
Matt

Isnt it funny so many of these "people" who participate in these dangerous and ignorant handling practices know each other and defend each other?! To say someone should be able to do what they wish(when it is harmful to them or others) because of religious belief is ignorant as well. If we followed this thinking there would be all kinds of zealots running aroung hurting themselves in one fashion or another. Unfortunately it has become societys duty to save these people from themselves whether we want to or not. So stop blaming the government when the bans come about. Its neither their fault nor Jim Harrisons. Its Jeremys, the free handling preacher, and everyone else that handles these animals in a way that is inappropriate. It also falls on the shoulders of anyone that sells to these type individuals to make a quick buck.

I am very near to closing this thread for the deplorable display of several people's behavior, attitude and language.
1. DO NOT attack individual persons.
2. DO NOT attack people's religeous beliefs.
3. DO NOT use profanity.
4. DO NOT use threatening language.
5. Act like responsible adults.
OR
I will simply start removing every post you make.
If you feel this post is directed at you - there is probably a reason for you to feel that way.

Al,
You said "If you're not part of the solution you're part of the problem". My ammendment is that "and sooner or later, this behavior will take you out of the equation." heeeheeee ;-)
I'll keep the rest of my observations to myself, because it wont make a difference anyway on this topic. Religion is one subject where people can be VERY close minded about things.
