Anonymous, I guess all Keepers have their own way of handling Venomous Snakes. As for doing it right, I was Trained by a man with over 40 years Experience in Keeping Venomous Reptiles. He always told me to do what I felt comfortable doing and nothing else. He also was a Tailing Person and he taught me the method very well, but now I do not and will not put even one finger on any of my Animals. I say this because He told me to do only what I am comfortable doing. After what happened with me and the Copperhead, I thought hard about the possibility of it happening with a more Dangerous Snake. Now, I hear Herpers tell me that Tailing is safe, but I see having to touch a Venomous Snake with your hands to be un-safe. Sense my little encounter with my beloved Copperhead, I have never Tailed another Snake and I never will again, unless it is totally necessary....................Be safe ya’ll, happy herping Wally

I posted this on another thread, too.
The upside AND downside of being a teenager is that they usually grow up sooner or later. For me, it was much of my training in venomous animals that helped me to mature and get my life on track, even though I was an already an adult at the time I started.
It's been said that Venomous Keepers are about 1/1000 of all reptile keepers in this country. When we criticize and tear each other down, we run the risk of diminishing what is already a very arcane and elite group of people. What little voice we have in legal and other matters that concern us and our hobby, too, is diminished in the process.
None of us has a perfect record. NONE OF US. Even if one of us has never been bitten, each of us has had or certainly will have a close call or a moment of vulnerability that could have been avoided.
I'm not saying that Ling Ling is wrong in pointing out stuff about Jeremy and Phillip. All I'm saying is that these boys are in a formative stage of 1) their lives, and 2) their herp careers. It would be unfair to characterize their long term potentials based on such an early-intermediate state. I hope they both continue to grow in knowledge, and more importantly, in wisdom. That's the point when you know that even though you CAN hold a copperhead with your lips and get away with it, that you must never ever do so.
When we offer criticism and ridicule, it might be fun for you and me, but in the end it doesn't help them. These boys may be in a position, one day to help some of us with something we need. I'd rather they looked back favorably on the rest of us because we gave them guidance, even if they had to take some ribbing in the process -- ribbing that we've ALL taken at some point. In other words, if we poke fun, make sure that we also give them a nugget of something they can use.
Best,
Alex

Alex, that was well put. It all boils down to growing pains, the damn things are painful to handle “LOL”. I remember going through the same bull when I was at that age. It is something that we all have to do, it just makes us stronger. Life is always a learning process and it bites like all get out “LOL”.....................Be safe ya’ll, happy herping Wally

well people want to know where stereotypes come from show a tape of a frenzied sect of people namley in some old run down church used for weird stuff as churches serve a purpose anyway most people this side of the pond will be repelled + facinated and trying to explain to them that they have seemingly taken bible context to far. glad there dont seem to be many if any such people ever told about in England i like having the n.h.s. with a few more real bad bites we will be paying the medicals ourself. thats why we pay national insurance does anyone no where anti-venom is held in england are zoos best or are there other direct supplies keyz.

How come I never see these religous snake wranglers handling Dendroaspis or Acanthophis?...LOL.Not that a Puffy is any smarter.Okay let me get this right...So if my religon supports smoking crack and building pipe bombs than it is okay to do so in the name of my religon...lol.I would say both are as stupid and dangerous as free handling a Puff.I have to say that some of the stuff I have read in this thread has had me rolling on the floor in laughter.("A Copperhead in my mouth"..LOL...ROFL.) I think those type personal problems have no place on this site....LOLOLOL
