I have found that length from vent to tail has been pretty accurate for me.In the clutch of Albino Atrox I breed this year all the sexes were consistent with the tail length. The females had noticeably shorter tail than the males. Just an observation not sure if there is any real data to back this up. Someone here probably know better than I do.............Trey

While probing is going to give you a definate answer, in most cases the striped area of the tail is longer in males than females, but there are always going to be exceptions.

Alex: You do not need a fancy set of probes.
Just take a metal paper clip, and straighten it out with pliars, then fold it in the middle back onto itself. Use the pliars to flatten the sides as close together and parallel as possible. This will leave you with two wires side by side, with a smooth rounded end that will not hurt the snake when you probe it. Any other small diamater solid wire would work also, like electrical wire, solder, etc.
You know how to make a holding tube by rolling plastic sheeting, so that part is not a problem.
Then just probe the snake gently, remember to use a little lube or spit on the probe before you insert it.
I have made these ``throw away`` probes for years, and have never had a problem using them.
Best Regards JohnZ

There has been a lot of good ideas, but I think I was correct this fall when I observed two c-artrox, one chasing the other, well I scooped up the one in front, and the other ran for cover....Thinking I had just got the female, I waited and watched for two hours while the heavier bodied snake would come out of his rubble pile and periscope around looking for the mate it was really creepy to watch this and I got so into photos I missed my chances to grab him and had to split up this wonderful couple. I am always by myself, and I learned real fast you can't catch and film at the same time or you will get into real trouble, and when you say "you wanna go relocate some snakes this weekend" usually it's hard to get a date
Anyway would everyone agree I probably got a female thattime?

Buzzard: I would say you got the lady. They're generally bigger, heavier, & pretty much always the chasee rather than the chaser.
