my experience has always been that the timber will do better. my basis is this: i have been herping for 20 plus years and i now do volunteer work for three police depts. handling they're "nite and weekend" calls for reptiles and such. i have had many "wild caught" timbers and canebrakes and never had one that didn't eat the first and every time i tried. (guess i've been lucky) some were slow, but they ate. in the same period of time, i captured more copperheads than any other hot. the ones i tried to feed rather than release immediately had a very high percentage of individuals that would kill a mouse, but would not eat it. i consider myself merely an "educated amateur". i'm sure that there are more, far better herps here that could better answer your question but i had to reply because i have several experiences in this area. hope this helps and hope someone else responds with more ideas or suggestions.
