hi Al how are the rbbs dealing with the cane toads as ive heard that there is a high motality rate amongst them due to these toads, what are our aussie counterparts doing to controll the cane toad population apart from running them over with steam rollers!
p.s. how large was the red belly black and also are you posting pics on the photo album here i really hope so
be safe man
kieron.

Hi:
The Cane Toads are in Queensland and I'm in New South Wales. They do take their toll on snakes! The Aussies just kill them on site or collect them and kill them. The toads are winning.
Having a good time but today seems to be a "down day" so far as it rained last night and is cool this morning. Maybe it will heat up and get sunny again later.
Cheers!
Al

It's very interesting talking to the locals. They claim the place is "Crawling" with snakes, "they're lying all over the place". Not true from what I've seen. I've done some extensive herping is places I would classify as "Disney Land" for snakes; fantastic habitiats with all sorts of prey, cover, and water....not a snake or even a shedding anywhere. If "they're all over the place" I would see road kills....not one of those either. Having a great time anyway.. A bad day of herping is better than a great day at work.
Later,
Al

Thats a really good point Al!
I saw today that Fresh Water Crocodiles are capable of killing Cane Toads, By holding them in ther longer snout untill they ooze out their venom and then they consume them,It was Steve Irwin that stated this, Hope you are having a better day.
Be Safe, Kieron.

Hi All, i'm new here but from NSW. The cane toad problem is getting really bad here with them spreading further every month.
Ther eis some talk that RBBS are starting to change, ibn that smaller bodied individuals that aren't capable of eating full grown toadsare becoming more prevalent.
As far as eating them goes i know of crows around Byron bay and Mullumbimbi that flip them on their back and eat them, avoiding the poisonous glands behind the eyes. Apart form them everything just seems to die :(
There are plenty of snakes in NSW though, depends on where you are looking, i live in Newcastle, just north of Sydney and we see RBBS frequently this time of year, Brown and Tiger snakes are also very common around the wetlands at my University.
I've always found that any piece of roofing tin in a paddock is bound to hold something.
