As Wolfgang states, the most likely ``two-step snake`` in Mali would be Echis ocellatus. These are called Ocellated Carpet Vipers or West African Carpet Vipers. They live in North Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa.
Another possibility would be Echis jogeri, which is known as the Mali Carpet Viper or Joger`s Carpet Viper. It is found in Northern Mali.
In my first post in this thread, I used the term ``Saw-scaled Viper,`` which is an old general term for all of the snakes in the Genus Echis.
However, the term ``Saw-scaled viper`` now is mostly used for species of Echis found in the Middle East, West Asia, the Indian Sub-continent, and some of North Africa.
The Echis found in Sub-Saharan Africa are now mostly called ``Carpet Vipers,`` instead of ``Saw-scaled Vipers,`` although both terms are still in use.
Best Regards JohnZ
