From Rubio's Rattlesnake: Portrait of a Predator--
"The keels add strength and elasticity to the scales. When large prey are ingested, creases between the scales unfold, permitting food animals larger than the snake's girth to be accommodated. The skin appears to be greatly stretched, but in fact is barely taxed. Also, keels reduce shininess, thereby enhancing cryptic coloration."
