Is Bill Haas the only person that injects himself with snake venom?
Why don't you hear about others that keep venomous snakes doing it?

I only know of one or two other people who have done it. As to why I don't do it, each exposure to venom (liquid or inhaled dust) increases chances for anaphylactic reactions. My feeling is that keepers should limit their exposure to venom because of this increased chance for hypersensitivity.

Bill Haast has access to, and personally weighs and mixes each injection. Currently he uses the venom of 32 different species. The injections are given on a weekly basis.
Simply put, who else has the knowledge or access to the snake venom and lab equipment ? If you wanted to pay for the pre-weighed venoms, what would it cost ? Not to mention that the FDA would probably frown on this if very many people started doing this.

If you started small, say for instance with one lesser venomous species and then as you built up you could add the snakes to your personal collection.
I know that the FDA would have a cow on this subject, but if you do it on your own who is to stop you? The way
that I am thinking is that Bill is not getting any younger, maybe we need someone else to carry on what he
has accomplished. As we see, he has been doing it for what 40 years and is still alive, I'm sure that if someone
would start in their 20's they would have even longer to find out the benifits of doing this.
As far as being dangerous, I think you would have better chances than an accidental envenomation that most of
us face everyday. And who knows if you built up a tolerance to all of the species in your collection maybe you would reduce your chances of suffering a fatal envenomation?
I don't know, but with some of the research going on now they are looking at the Agkistrodon c. contortrix for some
cures in cancer. Also with research in heart attacks and other stuff. I would imagine it will be only time before
we have approved vaccinations of some sort! But we know how slow our wonderful federal government is.

There are Burmese snake handlers that combine the powdered venom of the snakes they come in contact with and ink for tatoos and they tatoo their bodies with this mix of snake venom and ink. This is to make themselves more immune to the snake venom if one of them gets bit. Apparently not even one of these snakehandlers has ever been killed although they get bit often. Also it has apparently been proven that after you get bit by a snake you become more immune with each injection. Thought this might help you in telling you who also injects themselves with venom.
Although they are not like Bill Haast and inject themselves with venom they do tatoo themselves over and over again throughout their lives with this venom-ink to gain resistance. It works I guess.
