i was working on my car at my dads monday and got bitten by, what i think, is a spider. At first it felt like a hornet sting and i immediately reached for the spot on my shoulder and then took my shirt off and checked it and then on my back but saw nothing...definitely not a wasp, bee, hornet, or anything like that. then a place the size of my hand begin to swell and my arm went numb for about 2 hours....it hurt like hell, just like a burn but all over...the swelling went down by this morning and the bite is sore and it feels like someone hit my shoulder and top of my arm with a bat almost like it's bruised down to the bone...i'm not allergic to anything that stings or bites that i know of but im wondering what it is...could a partial envenomation from a brown recluse be possible because they are around there and there are a few really small scorpions, no bigger than a half dollar, around in the rock cliffs....i was out in the woods taking a cable out of a junk car when it happened...any ideas..not worried but curious....and what kind of scorpions are around there(northwest alabama)...i always hear "wood scorpions"...dark brownish red with a black stinger...really small...maybe young..i dunno

You may of been stung by a Cow Killer (Dasymutilla occidentalis). They have a fairly painful sting. In fact that's how they got their name.

Sorry it took me a long time to write back. i figured i would look at my arachnid books and try to come with something. i'm guessing you might have been bitten by a widow spider(Lactrodectus) and there was just a weak reaction. i have kept several species, but i have never been bitten once. bites are supposed to be much more painful and intense than that, but i guess it depends on a number of factors. i really like John White's cow killer idea. a cow killer is also called a velvet ant ( which is a wasp with an ant like apperance). i hope i helped a little
