I posted this on kingsnake.com, but I wanted to also post it here to get as many responces as possible.
I just got a mangrove snake (finally) and had a curious thought pass through my mind. Do mangrove snakes, being nocturnal and all, really need a reptile light to digest properly? I realize many snakes and other reptiles do need light, but I would imagine that snakes that evolved to hunt their prey at night and don't usually get out and bask during the day would have evolved the ability to digest without light. Thanks for any help

from what i've heard lizards and definitely turtles and tortoises need the uv rays in daylight for bone development, etc and snakes it really isn't that important if even at all...they need the heat to digest mostly....i've read that too much exposure to uv rays will even dull some of their colors in certain species....im not a herpetologist though and even they can't always agree on it ...so...who knows...
