Hi to all,
I am planning a trip to SW Indiana (Evansville) and would like to know if anyone knows about regulations pertaining to reptiles there as far as collecting. Also if it is legal to herp there, where is a good place to go and what time of year is best?

You might want to check this web site:
http://www.in.gov/dnr/fishwild/endangered/regs.htm
It says in part: ``Indiana residents over the age of 17 may not collect amphibians or reptiles from the wild in Indiana unless they have a valid hunting or fishing license, unless otherwise exempted by law.``
From the way I read the regs, it seems that you can collect some reptiles and amphibians in Indiana if you possess a valid fishing or hunting liscense.
I am not sure that if you purchase an out of state fishing liscense that the same would apply, but it might. Many states have fairly inexpensive 3 and 5 day fishing liscenses available for tourists.
Your best bet would be to eMail the Indiana Department of Natural Resources directly.
Hope this helps
Best Regards JohnZ

Hmmm. So does that mean that someone under the age of 17 can collect reptiles? Seems a little vague.

Checked with DNR in Indiana and I have to purchase a fishing/hunting license. I can collect four of each specie with the license. The under 17 thing is very strange though, I guess if your a kid you catch what you want there? I am just looking for a eastern hognose that has pattern instead of the usual black morphs here in Florida.

We have rules like that here in the US. You can go fishing just about anywhere (within reason) here in SC without a license until you are 16. You can also hunt without a license until 16, but you have to be accompanied by an adult until you are 18. I think the idea is to foster joy in outdoor sports for the "next generation" without the constraints of too many rules. Once they're old enough, though (i.e. once they're hooked) BAM. You slap them with fees, rules, and licenses galore. It actually seems like a logical system to me.
