I have recently been hired at the Zoo in Jackson Mississippi to take care of the new snake exhibit. This will include all the venomous snakes of Mississippi (Crotalus adamanteus, C. horridus, Sistrurus miliarius, Agkistrodon contortrix, A. piscivorus, and Micrurus fulvius ) a major portion of this position will be speaking and educating the visitors. This will be an opportunity to teach people about what snakes are really like, to give them fact and hopefully dispel the mythos that people have created about these animals. Several local physicians have expressed interest in snake venom toxicology and treatment of envenomation. I would like to get some really good presentations together concerning:
natural habitat
the benefits snakes contributes to the ecology
medical benefits derived from snake venom
anatomy and physiology of pit organs
anatomy and physiology of venom delivery system(fangs, glands, ducts, muscles).
venom components (PLA2’s, enzymes, proteolytic, hemolytic agents, neurotoxins pre synaptic, post synaptic, etc.)
evolution of snake venoms and toxins
How does anti venom neutralize snake venom
examples of actual snake behavior,
I would appreciate any advice or sources to look to for information. Also, I you have any info on visual aids such as cross section models, skeletons or skull models, or detailed pictures of anatomy and physiology of above mentioned or related species, medical plate photos of venom actions on the different systems, organs and cells that are effected by snake envenomation I would be most interested.
Thank you,
J.S. Harrison

I am not asking you guys and girls to do my homework for me. I am going through all my books and saved papers accumulated over the last 4 years, along with my new full time job, and being a full time college student. However some of you with more experience might be able to give me some good ideas to go with this exhibit. Also your perspectives, interests and focus will be diffrent from mine. Therefore your insite might be one I have missed or lead me in another direction making the information that much better. This is a good opportunity to educate the general public and health care professionals about the realities of venomous snakes. I would like very much to for this exhibit to be as informative and professionally presented as possible. Again I thank you for any input and advice. Please respond at this post or you may e-mail me privately

Feel free to use any of the information on my site.
It represents more than thirty years of giving educational programs and over forty years of working with snakes.
