What can you guys tell me about keeping Copperheads and Black-Tailed Rattlesnakes in captivity? Any remarks or observations of behaviour that could help me prepare for my next two venomous snakes?

Mark: Black-Tailed Rattlesnakes usually do really well in captivity. They readily feed on mice, and often have a laid-back disposition. They are snakes of arid regions, so care would be similar to that of a Western Diamond-Back Rattlesnake.
As far as Copperheads, most make very good captives. Every now and then you will run accross one that is very nervious, but most settle quite nicely to captivity. Avoid very young and new borns, as they can be problem feeders.
If you search the Experts archives here, you will find many, many past articles on captive care of both of these animals.

Mark,
One thing that doesn't seem to get a lot of notice.
I have found that Copperheads seem to do a lot better in captivity if they have a hide box that they can sit in and look out through the hole.
Just a little thought.

Hi Karl thanks for your reply. I do like the idea of a hide box for any snake as they enjoy their privacy however i prefer to use large pieces of cork bark as a hide as this looks more natural and more attractive and my other snakes get on well with them. Could i use this for the copperhead as well? The cork bark is placed in the cooler variant of the vivarium while in the warmer variant i use a safely stacked pile of medium sized flat flint stones that the snake can bask on as well as hide under. Well, that is to say i plan on doing this once my juveniles have reached sub-adult and are large enough to be let loose in the fully set up viv. At the moment i have a large viv inside which i have placed a medium plastic container housing my baby vipera ammodytes with 2 more containers of the same size to house a baby copperhead and a baby B-T rattlesnake once aqquired.
