Well, we are back from Osceola and I must say it sucked! Osceola that is. We got down there and didn’t see a thing, not even a Bug, so we headed to places that I know snakes are. One being St Mary’s Ga, and within 20 minutes we found 2 huge Canebrakes. The next morning we got up and headed for Summerton Sc. At 9 am we were walking deep in a swamp that feeds Lake marion and had 10 Cottonmouths in less than 2 hrs. Now that’s my kind of herping....

Bryan: Good luck on your herping trip.
You picked a good time, as the weather is going to be warm, and there will be some rain moving in.
Should be some good activity, both road cruising and field collecting. The roads will still cool fairly quickly, even if they get a lot of sun during the day, as the ground temperatures are still somewhat cool.
If you are going to road cruise, try to get out about an hour or two before dark. This time of year, there is a lot of late afternoon activity from snakes, and some should be crossing the roads before dark.
Wish I could be in S. Ga and N. Fla this week.
Best Regards JohnZ

Jeff,
Osceola will pick up in a month or so.
Just the geography of the place lends itself more to road cruising than flipping. Once it warms up a little more there will be plenty out on the roads there.

We traveled the roads around Gum swamp. Are those pretty good roads to cruise at night in hot weather? I thought maybe I was just in a bad area....

Yeah, St. Marys is amazing. I saw my first eastern indigo snake there as well as another freshly shed indigo skin.

I have been tearing up snakes in the Ocala National. Last night on FR-67 netted three nice 5-8" Dusky Pigmies, numerous ribbons and Fla garters, 1 adult Yellow Ratsnake, and two large Coral snakes (26-32 inches). I agree with Carl, two hours before dark I hit the roads and stay until one hour after dark. The roads cool so fast now, it will need to get alot warmer before you can cruise until 10 or 11 and still pick stuff up. Osceola has another two to three weeks before Pygmies and Canebrakes are on the roads. The pigs there are nice because I occasionally find one that has no vertebral stripe. Anerythristic? I do not know for sure. Come down my way and cruise, you should do good, especially this weekend coming up. It has been in the upper 80's for about ten days now.
Carl, I have never been to St. Marys, anyone willing to let me herp with them? If not, how about a road to look on for flipping?
