first off,i know its illegal to collect pygmies.... with that out of the way- i'm going to hyde co. again this week(last week netted a canebrake, etc.) what are the best areas to look for a red pygmy? i was told road cruising is the best way to find them-seemed a little off to me.. i've heard sand roads,etc... thanks alot!-adam hoyt

Unfortanily you are not at the best time of year for pigmies. The Carolina Pigmies are found at best in August, September, and October because that is their primary mateing season. The best way is just road crusing at night on blacktop roads.

Hi Adam,
There are some awesome pics on this site in the feild herping photo gallery from Lake Mattamuskeet NC. They show a real nice Red Pigmy in the morning crossing the dirt road. A word to caution, Game Officers have stopped and inspected vehicles in the past to check for illegal snake hunting there. Be careful and good luck.

Unless I'm just reading too much into this and you just want to take pictures,I can't beleive this conversation is happening. We're here to promote conservation of these reptiles. If there are laws against taking a specie, might we trust our rulemakers? OK, so they're usually total morons, but is that a chance we need to take? Perhaps that law is in place because the wildlife biologists wanted to protect a weak population. Just my 2 cents worth.

I agree. I am not trying to implement it is okay to hunt a protected species, anywhere. The animal in particular is protected there. I would not hunt the snake there. There are areas in South Carolina and Georgia that the same coloration of Carolina Pigmy occurs and the snakes are not protected by any laws.
