What vehicles do you prefer
for off road field herping.
I'm interested in the pros
and cons of specific models
in different terrains.

I'm a Jeep Wrangler man all the way. I have the 6 cylinder/ 4.0 liter Sport model w/ AC and Auto Transmission. They have plenty of power, but are low profile and fit into places that you wouldn't imagine. Just recently I drove it down a 4wheeler trail through a hardwood forest. Parts are easy to find, the engines are extremely reliable, and........... they look cool too. ;-)
I also have the Warn 9.5ti thermometric winch on the front bumper. After almost bogging it down in the Apalachicola NF, 20 miles from ANYONE, I realized the winch would have been my only way out of that predicament. So I bought one! But keep in mind that a winch keeps the majority of it's value for years to come.
A good Jeep can be found for around $15K.
Downfalls? Storage space. If you can afford it, buy a Jeep Unlimited. See URL:

I use a Jeep Cherokee. As with the Wrangler mentioned above, it is a 6 cylinder/ 4.0 liter Sport model w/ AC and Auto. The Cherokee is a bit longer giving you more space, especially with the rear seat folded down. The length makes it a bit less capable than the Wrangler (though only marginally), but I find the extra room and the wagon body more than makes up for that shortfall. The Cherokee had a twenty plus year production run so, as with the Wrangler, parts and service are no problem. As noted above, if you going into really ugly areas, a winch can save a lot of grief.
The Cherokee went out of production 5 years ago, but there are still plenty of good ones out there and they should be well under 10k by now.
Either vehicle is a good choice. With the Cherokee now out of production, if I have to replace mine (in 15 or 20 years - I drive them till they drop) I'll probably go with a Wrangler unless Jeep sees the light and dumps the wretched 3.7 Liberty for something more like the old Cherokee.

Speaking of Jeeps, I just happen to have one for sale that is PERFECT for road cruising. (Check out the picture of it under my profile). It's a 2003 Wrangler with 50,000 miles on it and lots of flood lights for night time herpin'. If anyone is interested, you can e-mail me for specifics.
