Hello to all, I wanted to ask if anyone has luck looking for snakes in North Carolina in the month of Oct or November. I have never been to NC before and plan on a trip to the mountains there in the fall. Time may allow a outdoor excursion and I would like to locate and photograph rattlesnakes. Will the snakes still be active in Oct. or do they start dissappearing before then? Not sure when their temps start dropping in the mountain ranges. Area is in the Blue Ridge Mtns. Before you reply, I am not collecting. Thanks to all.

Paul: You might still find some snakes in October.
If the temperatures are above 50 degrees, they will possibly be basking near denning sites during the day, or even out crawling.
It is much less likely that you will see snakes in November in the N.C. mountains, unless we have a very, very mild winter.
Hope this helps.

Paul,
Near the coast there will still be plenty of activity in Oct... unless we have an unexpected cold snap. If you like cottonmouths they will be basking in the sun in the marsh. If you dont want to go to the deep bush, you can also road cruise for Black Racers, Black Rats, Corn, E. King, E. Hognose... and various others. Typically that is a great time to visit... unless there is a Hurricane coming!!!

Paul: It will probably be somewhat warmer along the coast, but will still get cold enough each evening that snakes will be underground in sheltered areas.
If the day-time temperatures rise above 50 degrees, and preferably above 60 degrees, and it is not windy, you have a chance of seeing a snake out, usually not far from shelter.
There is a short window of time during winter days that snakes sometimes come out to bask in the sun. Cottonmouths in particular are fond of doing this, and can sometimes be found even in December and January, if the conditions are right.
Hope this helps. JohnZ

I wish I could have planned this trip in the spring but...work. Maybe I should try and move our trip forward a month into September to see more snakes. I thought they would be cruising around in breeding behavior and would be easier to see males out and about. I just went to western Kentucky and the only snake I saw was a Black kingsnake. :( 2200 miles sort of burst my bubble about going blindly into a new state to herp in. I will try and look for some debris to flip. Thanks to all.

Hello Paul,
What part of N.C are you planning to visit. I know some guys in western N.C that may be able to help you out. Also in Maggie Valley there is a mini zoo called Soco Gardens that displays reptiles..he used to get a few local rattlesnakes for his pit. He may know someone that can help you also.
October is not a good time to be looking though, but if the weather is right you never know. Some guys took me to a den in late september once, but we didn't see anything.

Actually Soco Gardens has closed, but their gift shop is still open, which seems pointless. There has been talks that they have shut down for good, but are going to leave the gift shop. They had a few nice animals. I live about 4-5 miles from Soco Gardens in Western NC. There used to be a pretty cool reptile zoo in Cherokee, NC called "snakes alive". But, the owner died and the wife has sold everything. Let me know if I can be of any help for anyone visiting Western NC.

p.s. Hey Andrew, I haven't forgot about you man. I'm going to call you this weekend.

I was hoping to stick over by the coastal side of North Carolina. That is where our relatives are and I did not want to spend my time driving too much. What time of year are the male rattlesnakes out crawling after females in NC? I know they are active in the fall, I am just not sure of the time frame because I have never been there before. I know in South Carolina, September through October is a good time to see Canebrakes crawling along with Pigmy and Easterns. I will only have two days at the most to go exploring and wanted to make the most of it. I'll keep my fingers crossed. Thanks for all the advise.
Sincerely,
Paul
