I have a question for some you who know much about the cobra, and the Indian celebration of Naga Panchami. ANY information would be greatly appreciated, seeing as how I can't seem to find a lot of quotable internet sources. I should let anyone with knowledge on this know that I am studing this subject for a college term paper, and need to reference my sources, so if this is a problem,please don't respond. Thanks in advance for any info. and your time! David

I don't know much about it myself, nor any printed sources, but searching yahoo for "Nag Panchami" gets 1900 pages. That seems to be the more common transliteration, but "Naga Panchami" gets another 1100 hits...

Yeah, but google lies. :)
They give a ballpark estimate of the number of hits so they can return the first page before the search finishes, and in this case it's way off for some reason. The actual number seems to be about the same as yahoo...

Thanks to everyone that has responded, the problem is likesome of you mentioned, that many of the hits have misleading, or little info on the actual customs, beliefs, and rituals of the ceremony. I guess I will keep trying all 25,000 sites till I find a great one. Thanks for the knowledge, and let me know if any of you find something at a site that you think would benefit my search!

Modify your searches by adding, one or two at a time, keywords pertaining specifically (and ideally ONLY) to the customs, beliefs, and rituals pertinent to your search. Don't forget to specify that ALL of the words be present. You should be able to exponentially reduce the number of irrelevant hits.

Parenthetically, bear in mind that "Nag" was the name of the male cobra in Kipling's immensely popular "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi." Adding a WITHOUT "Kipling" (or, for that matter, "Rikki") to your search may also help.

Ah! Now I see I was mistaken about how Chris got so many hits on google.
Search on "Nag Panchami"...you need to type the quotes. That cuts out almost everything that doesn't have something to do with this specific festival (although much of it is still pretty useless.)
