This is my second attempt. Hi Mark, Which scientific name applies to which tiapan. The inland tiapan, and the coastal tiapan. I believe the Kevin Budden story said he captured a Oxyuranus scutellatus but other websites say the inland is a Oxuranus microlepidus. Also what is a PNG tiapan. Please advise and thanks from Bill Quinn in Blue Springs, Missouri. You can use my juno email address of n0ryx@juno.com if my sbc address doesn't come through with this question.

Bill: Don`t take my word on any of this, as I am not up on the current status of taipan classification.
However, if you visit the web site of Dr. Bryan Greg Fry,( venomdoc.com ) who is a regular site member here, he states that Oxyuranus scutellatus is from Papua New Guinea, and that the inland taipan is Oxyuranus microlepidotus.
I would suggest you visit his site and message board and ask your question, as he lives there, and will be most able to answer your question on the current classification of these amazing animals.
Hope this helps. Best Regards JohnZ

Bill, to the best of my knowledge, the PNG taipan's scientific name is Oxyuranus scutellatus canni. Hope this helped.

Both are correct.
Budden was killed by a Coastal Taipan (Oxyuranus scutellatus scutellatus), native to mainland Australia.
The Inland Taipan is Oxyuranus Microlepidotus, also from the mainland.
The PNG Taipan is Oxyuranus scutellatus canni, from Papua New Ginea (PNG), half of a two nation island off the coast of Australia.
At the time Budden was killed the Inland Taipan was known by a different name and not considered related to what we now call the Coastal Taipan, which was just known as the Taipan and probably called that in the article you read.
Hopefully that was clear and I didn't goof anything up...

Yes, as it has been stated, here it is:
Oxyuranus scutellatus - Coastal Taipan
Oxyuranus microlepidotus - Inalnd Taipan
the PNG Taipan (O.s.canni) is a subspecies of the coastal taipan from Australia.
In the past, Oxyuranus microlepidotus was called Parademnasia microlepidata and, like it was said, was thought to have nothing to do with the coastal or PNG taipan.
