I have been breeding Elaphe dione for years now and the usual hatch time is 30 days. I had nine eggs laid on the fourth of July and are now hatching as I type.
This specie has hatched in 14 days here once, but never so quickly! SIX DAYS! The snakes retain their eggs until close to hatching due to such short summers in their natural habitat.
Even though they are not venomous, I thought some of you would find this extremely interesting.

that's amazing!! A friend of mine has observed how eastern hognose eggs are laid with the embryos at a very late stage of development as well. Amazing what nearctic snakes with short summers will do to increase survival!!

I have been taking pictures since the first egg pipped. I will post them here if anyone wants to see what the egg shell looks like. It is very soft and pliable, not like a normal snake egg. In my opinion it is between a live bearer membrane and the normal eggs shell. Oh, by the way, they are for sale. As soon as they shed and eat I will post them here for sale.

Smooth Green Snakes are also in that same category; extremely short incubaton periods (we have had some hatch in less than 10 days)....these snakes are going to be livebearers before too long!

Out of curiosity, I Googled this species and found the following on one site ( www.tomhalvorsen.co.uk/info/dione.htm ) :
"They will breed readily in the vivarium and the eggs have a very short incubation period, we have known eggs to hatch in as little as 13 days after laying, but in most instances the normal incubation period is around 21 days. We have also on two occasions, over two consecutive years, witnessed twins being hatched from eggs that had a shorter than average incubation time."
Even by that standard, 6 days is quick. Does anyone know the average time span between mating and egg laying? I would assume it to be substantial.

Also, again out of curiosity, does anyone know what species has the LONGEST average incubation time?

I breed eastern indigo snakes and some of the eggs have taken up to 125 days (100 days is more average); I am not aware of anything much longer than that but I'm sure there's one out there.
