Well it actually happened of my own stupidity of course.I got in a hurry and was on the last venomous, keep in mind I've been keeping venomous for over 15 years w/out a problem, but Sun was Nimrod day.I didn't see my little juvie canebrake so instead of getting the hook, what I do?Glad you asked,I reached in the cage and flipped over his hidebox when I saw he wasn't there!!!He was in the top lip of the Vision cage and Bam!He tagged me!Just a little swealing and a big hospital bill thank god,but I guess that was a warning to WAKE THE HELL UP YOU DUMMY AND TAKE YOUR TIME!Just thought I'd share the experieence..................peace

Well Craig:
I'm glad you are okay and didn't have a very serious bite.
Craig's bad experience is just another RED light! Everyone take note...
I would say many of captive snakebites are from people NOT using the tools of the trade and sticking their hands where the should not go. I know of at least two that were fatal. I wrote more than one post about it and this should be a reminder about the upper & lower lips of the Vision cages being a hazzard for keepers that keep smaller sized hots in them. I block those spaces with extruder foam so the damn things can't hide there or I put a note on the cage to remind ME or someone else that they can hide HERE. Futhermore, If you don't know where it is and can't see it, don't bother to enter the cage, it's just not worth the risk.

I second Al's observation about the upper and lower "lips" of Vision cage's. As someone who has "babysat" Al's "kids" is a real wake up when the cage label say's B.atrox 1.1 and you only can find one! The little devil and I mean devil got behind the extruded foam. I started using a vehicle inspection mirror with an extenson handle to search the space above and below the Vision cage and behind the light fixtures. It works like a charm. If anyone is interested I'll get you the part number from the local NAPA store. Thers less than 10.00

Al is RIGHT.
Before I even unlock a cage, much less open it, I make sure I know where the occupant is and where it's attention is directed.
No exceptions.
Ever.
Thirty plus years with no bites, not even a close call - knock on wood. Take it back. NOT "knock on wood." There is no luck factor, just careful calculated meticulous attention to every detail every second that one is dealing with the animals. Otherwise you pay the price. I don't intend to pay it.

i constantly dream about getting bitten.....just like fighting, the actual pain or consequences OTHER than "damaged rep" don't matter.....but to have people look at you and whisper "that's the guy who was bitten....he's a tool....he's a loser.....he is ugly", well, that would hurt........
at least it wasn't a big deal......but sometimes, maybe it's necessary, because a minor bite that puts you back in the correct frame of mind after years of doing the same things may be just what some need.....heck of an adrenalin rush though, huh? lol

...I just went to a lecture that Dr. Bill Brown gave last night, and believe it or not, he said that "Timber Rattlesnakes do make nice pets....they're gorgeous, relatively placid, and live 25 years"....HOWEVER, he also mentioned about the Canebrake's neutrotoxicity and that the whole Timber rattlesnake complex has as its nearest relatives: the WESTERN(C. oreganus, C. helleri) and MOJAVE rattlesnakes....we know what kind of venom they possess, so BE EXTREMELY careful and take no chances!!!
For the same reason that Visions have the nasty lip(and Bothrops spp. love to hang out up there before more than rattlesnakes), I still buy used Neodeshas whenever I can get my hands on them. Still much safer than a vision for hots.
