Western Cottonmouths often are much darker on there ventral(belly) than the other cottonmouth species. Florida cottonmouths have cospicuous head markings. Eastern cottonmouths often show more or a pattern than other species.

just to add, A.p conanti has darker lip and cheek strips... wile A.p piscivorus are allmost absent and A. p lucostoma (I think thats how its spelled) are so dark you can't see them...
bare in mind these are rules for adults only young are much harder to tell...
take a look at the photo album, or better yet send me some pics when you get them!!!
stay safe with the little cottons...
oh ya my e-mail is anubispostalservice@yahoo.com

Hello,
The best way to tell piscivorus from conanti is the facial markings. Conanti has the most vivid and well defined markings of all of the subs, usualy. They also have 2 stripes which stretch from the bottom jaw/lip, up onto their nose. The stripes do not go onto the snout in piscivorus.
Another thing I have noticed between the 2 is the tendancy of piuscivorus haveing a kinda line threw the eye. Take a look at the Crotalid 2 album on this site to see a pic of what I am talking about of teh first page. This line seems to be absent for the most part in Conanti but I have not seen enough animals to comment on weather this would be a determining factor or not. ILL put it this way, every pure eastern I have seen has had this stripe threw the eye and I dont see it in my big male conanti at all.
One last difference I have noticed is the blukiness. While both are considered the gaboons of the Americas:-) FLs seem to get more chunky and have a much more chunky, fat heads then do piscivorus in my experince.
BTW, all of the lucostoma I have seen have been way different then the 2 eastern subs and I have never had a prob telling them apart. I cant say for certin what the chaecterisitics would be but they shouldnt be too hard to tell apart.
Welp, I hope you enjoy your new trapjaw! If you can find out, get the local the animal came from and we should be able to correctly ID it.
All the best,
jeremy
