according to a bunch of family and other churchgoers snakes are supposed to be hated by man because of the stories in the bible...why do fictitious stories carry so much weight with people to the point they hate something, in this case snakes...any southern baptists out there know about this....i knew they thought evolution was inaccurate but i really havent heard about this...dont care to argue religion though..

oh yeah...i'm only saying something because i still dont believe thats what the adam and eve story is implying...if it is then that kinda pisses me off...but i doubt it...hope im right..

Not arguing religion, but the "story" isn't ficticious, at least not to me. Satan appeared to Eve, presenting her with the fruit of "knowledge" in the "Garden" in the form of a serpent. That is when God cursed the serpent to crawl on it's belly for eternity. I'm a far cry from Sunday School as an 8 year old, but I believe this is close.

God made the world in 6 days; rested on the 7th.
We are surpose to charish life, and the other creatures that have been created. Yet I still see Fellow baptist shooting turtles and snakes because they are eating all there fish in the pond or for fun... God made us perfectly in his eyes.....
Personally I find it hard to believe a book that was written and re-written and translated more than once. Some parts may be true but I doubt the whole thing is word for word what it was originally.
Either way its interesting

hey biff....exactly....im an atheist and religious preference doesnt matter to me when im talking to someone....just like what color they are or if they are tall or not...just wandering why a very large group(baptists) would believe something like that...how can it be right to be a sworn enemy with a snake...not like it's plotting against us humans...that's straight up ignorance...that hurts herpers a lot if thats a reason....thats wrong

Allright...I'm hooked, I have to reply...However, for brevity's sake I won't address the translation issues, just the snake issues (still somewhat on topic).
The passage in ? is Gen 3:15 (read it for yourself, I might lie to you). This passage has held true for over 6000 years (Ussher's time line), which is more than I can say for any man. Did you ever think the reason most women (not all, don't let the exception prove the rule) vehemently dislike snakes is because of Gen 3:15 is fulfilled as prophecy?? I can think of 4 women off the top o' my head who abhor snakes and haven't read Gen. 3:15...they think snakes are ugly, disgusting, and scary...it seems to be something built in...some would say it's evolution...personally I don't have that much faith...I would say it's Gen. 3:15 being fulfilled. Now I know there are many women who visit this site that don't fear serpents...they of course already possess an interest in snakes, therefore we wouldn't see the larger slice of women who dislike snakes because they wouldn't be perusing this site. So if "x" number of women post it really can't show anything (you get my point I'm sure).
I don't really wish to get banned from here so I will only continue this discussion via email, it's in my profile. I welcome discussion, :-)

I am a christian and I believe in god, but yet I have a facination of snakes. I'm the only one out of all of my relatives that love them. As a serpent, I suppose that is just an animal that satan chosed to be. I'm sure it would be the same with any other creature. If he was a spider or even a bear, I'm sure certain people would hate them. I know i'm not very fond of spiders.
If you have a bible, read further into it. And it will tell of turtles and crocodiles and such and that you shouldn't touch them. All old testiment.
Its just something that people have a belief in.

it's interesting that before man created god that the egyptians and greeks believed in different gods for different events of natural phenomena....we look at them as an advanced civilization for their time of course but the fact that they werent christians is less than appealing to a lot of people....i know more men that hate snakes than women by the way and why is there no proof(other than the bible)of any major event that should have some evidence...we can dig up 90million year old dinosaur bones but theres no proof of an ark that had to be huge(2 of every animal) and no proof of any kind that david existed...i cant believe something to the point where its a major part of my life just because others do...that is the main reason most people are "christian" and others are afraid not to believe...what good does that do...i dont know what it's like when a human dies but it would go against all that we know for a heaven/hell afterlife to exist...as far as we know the laws of physics apply everywhere...and the bible is interepreted in millions of ways by the same kind of people...all that matters is if you're a decent person or not...a lot of christians aren't....like the child molesting priests of catholic churches....if i were god i wouldnt let that go on...that is as wrong as it gets...im not a member of the satanic church...thats stupid...but i do wuv my widdiebiddie snakes...evil or not.....they just dont have legs because evolution saw it fit to make them like they are because of the obvious benefits....thats what i believe...
