Today was a long day at work. One of my main joys going home is seeing all my snakes either moving about their cages or hissing as I walk in, but all was not well today. I found my male albino monocled cobra dead. Two days ago he had eaten was fiesty as ever, yesterday he was hooding at me as i watched him, this morning was out and about as usual. I have no clue what happened to him the female I got her at the same time is perfect. This sucks, I have lost snakes to disease before but all had signs this time nothing. Just wanted to vent

Sorry to hear it. Unfortunately you never know what the animal went through before it came into your care. Do you know anything about the history of the animal or the person you bought it from?

OH, sorry to hear such terrible news. What else can I say... take care and emphasize observation of any other specimens you have.
Did you ever check for parasites? did you ever consider any genetic factors involved due to being an albino? Any other physiological condition like renal or hepatic failure, respiratory or heart conditions?
Have in mind these considerations with any other animals you have, and again... I'm really sorry to hear about it... nothing compares to that gut feeling when there was no reason for things to go wrong.

I agree, a very sad event but it happens to us all I'm afraid. I've lost snakes to the same SSDS (Sudden Serpent Death Syndrome), snakes fine, acting normal, feeding, drinking and then a few ours later is dead on the floor of the cage. Sometimes it doesen't take much to push them over the edge. Sorry again.

David, I'm verry sorry to hear about your loss, the pair you purchased was as you stated nothing but a pair of 100% solid snakes. As Al stated I too have had snakes die of SDSS in the past, but since working closely with a great reptile Vet the last few years I'm afraid that disease is cured :)Although knowing COD's sometimes doesn't always help either(i.e. liver failure, common COD in many herps, can be the result of many various causes, which sometimes can be hard to determine). But back to your loss David, after working with/breeding N. kaouthia as long as I have(I'm by no means saying I'm the "expert" on this forum) I'd like to offer any additional info I can. So please give me a call(you should still have my cell # email me if you don't)perhaps we can go over in more detail your housing/husbandry methods(I'm not saying that this was the problem, again SDSS does "exist") but perhaps we can try to get to the bottom of it, it's at least worth going over and being certain that nothing happens to that gorgeous female, also I'll have plenty to choose from in spring to get you a replacement male.- Tim MADDREPTILES
