my wife of over a year wants another hot, she already has an A.c.contortrix and has learned about as much as can be learned for the whole A.c. family and is very uprising in knowledge of most venomous and non-venomous snakes but now she wants a C.ceraste i have pondered on the idea of getting a pair for her for christmas, but am unsure in the fact that she has not had much experience with fast striking, hotter than copperhead snakes should i let her have the pair or should i offer her somthing along the lines such as a C.atrox to begin with?

I assume that because you are a married couple you are both mature adults. MANY a man on this forum would love to be in your position. Sure, my wife trusts me to keep hots (and truth be told she thinks that they're pretty cool), but she doesn't ask for them for Christmas. My suggestion would be to discuss this as a married couple. You sound as if you are unsure of her ability to keep hots, but how sure are you in your ability? I see you work for (or own) an exotic reptile business and keep cobras, so I should like to think that you are comfortable with your handling skills -but hopefully not too comfortable;).Perhaps you could work together and share responibility for the new snakes. Very few keepers have an opportunity like yours to have a partner in herps and marriage. Nurture that, my friend, and you will die a happy man.
If you're really lucky you might end up decorating your house around your herps - "I don't know honey, what color should we paint our bedroom?" "Lets go with a slate gray so our eyelash vipers will really stand out"
:)
good luck with your "conundrum". Let us know what you decide as a couple.

C. atrox can get really big, have lots of venom and most are quite nasty, whereas 'winders stay small and I think they would be more manageable for any keeper (no personal experience here with sidewinders).

Just because I'm difficult that way...
Do you mean Crotalus cerastes (Sidewinder) or Cerastes cerastes (Desert Horned Viper)?
Sidewinders can be challenging but are certainly a very satisfying little snake to begin with. Desert Horned Vipers are all those things too BUT they are exotic and thus you have the whole exotics antivenom issue to deal with. Your profile says you have Naja kaouthia so you may not really consider that an issue. It is just something else to consider.
If my wife was considering keeping a (second) venomous snake of her own (hypothetical situation only), I would be fine with Crotalus cerastes but not Cerastes cerastes until she had a little more experience under her belt.
That's just me. Not sure if it helps.
Karl

That is a rare one. My ex girlfriend of 6 years really started to love my hots, although I NEVER let her handle anything but a vine snake here and there. I remember being at a Hamburg show and her looking at me going, "ooh sweeite, that's beautiful. Let's get that one". It was an Ituri rhino viper. As I didn't have any access to that AV at the time, and bought some other snakes, I told her next time we'll get that one.
Never did end up getting it, but it is nice to have a partner that enjoys the beauty of these animals.
Hell, I even remember having to talk her out of buying a baby alligator that they were selling in one of those surf shops in Myrtle Beach. If the laws were different where we were, though,I may have bitten.

My wife has her own venomous snakes. She has her own Florida VR license. At this time she only has a Yellow Eyelash, but she comes home occasionally with a pigmy or when she surprised me and helped my best friend pick out a pair of gaboons for my birthday. In 2005 she brought home a trio of adult albino Eastern Diamondbacks as a surprise, I thought she was just buying hets!
I am proud that she has the experience of caring for the eyelash. She's the best, my best friend, and she hunts with me. I feel the urge to brag because she is such a blessing.
Count your blessings.

I guess you could say I am one of the lucky ones also. My wife went Herping with me last Spring , we found a 4 Ft. Cottonmouth just stretched out on an Old Dirt Road and to my amazement, she actually thought it was pretty. Now as we all know, most Old Cottonmouth’s are not that pretty of a Snake “considering how blame they look” but, she said pretty. This really knocked me for a loop “could I be so lucky “LOL”? Too this day, she still loves to go Herping with me when her Health allows it.
I thank my Lucky Stars every day, that I have her.
Be Safe Ya’ll, Happy Herping : Wally

I have to agree with Karl on this one.
Sidewinders are fun to keep and fairly safe for new keepers.
Horned Vipers are not at all suitable for a starting venomous keeper.
Western Diamond-Backed Rattlesnakes would be a poor choise also, as they grow large rather quickly, and are somewhat tempermental.
Hope this helps. Best Regards JohnZ
