Do any of you snake handlers know much about the distribution of cottonmouths in North Carolina? I am in Raleigh, right on the border of the coastal plain and the piedmont. I have heard that there is no official record of this dude in Wake County, but a friend swears to the baby Jesus that he has seen one in a state park nearby.
I worked in this park and remember that the rangers et al would laugh at visitors that claimed they saw a moccasin. I don't think that we are seeing a shift in distributions... blame global warming or anything like that.
So how improbable is it to think that there might be moccasins above the fall line?
