Hey guys,
Im building a new cage for my green tree monitors soon. I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on waterproofing the cage. I uses milemen wood for the first cage but im making it out of ply wood with time. Any help would be a big help on my part.

Mike, One of the best products to use is Polyurathane. You can get in clear or with an added wood color like oak or walnut, etc. I would use two coats. After it is very dry, take a wet cloth and wash it down some, as there will be a slight oily residue on the surface. Make sure it airs out for a few days before you put the animals in. If you can smell the polyurathane, it is still outgassing and not ready for animals yet. Let it air out 2 or 3 days for sure. There are several brands out there, but I generally use the MinWax brand.
Hope this helps.

JZ,
You might want to specify "water based" polyurethane ... the oil based kind isn't around much but it still does exist, its possible to accidentally pick up a can (as they are the same color!) and I definitely wouldn't recommend it.
The water based kind is great though. I used it on some wood cages I built several years ago and it's still doing fine on there.

Good Point Chad ! The water based poly is the way to go, and some stores could still be selling the old oil based type. I don`t think my local home depot even carries the oil type anymore, but some stores sure could. If someone did accidently use the oil based type, they should let it air out much longer and after it is very dry, wash it with warm soapy water several times to remove any oil residue. Best Regards JohnZ
