"I just called my grandpa who is a liscenced herp keeper in kansas and has been keeping venomous about 23 years"
Milksnakegreg, your grandpa is in KS and actually has a permit for his venomous snakes?
Do you know what insurance company is he using? I would love to find out few details about how he got the permit and for how many snakes.
Maybe you could give him my email and ask him to contact me? (my email is in my profile)
This is a first person in KS that I heard of having a permit to keep non-native venomous snakes.
I would honestly appreciate some more info. Thanks.
....Petra

I think that some Young People feel it to be important to make themselves look to be Big in the Eyes of others. This being said, I still know that there are Venders at Herp Shows, that Would and do Sell Venomous Snakes to Young People. If we are to stop the Bans, this is one thing we are going to have to crack down on. By not doing this, we Endanger our Hobby even more. One way we could do this, is by pressuring Show Coordinators to make it mandatory for all Venders to ID their potential Customers. In this way, it would cut down on the possibility of Youngsters obtaining Venomous or Dangerous Snakes.
If this Young Man did obtain such a Lethal Snake, you can almost be assured it was from some Lame Brain Dealer, that didn’t even bother ID’ing him.
PS: It is still hard for me to believe that someone in the Reptile Community, would ever use the words “Who Gives A Damn” with everything that has been going on (My god People, its not Brain Surgery). I hope, that this way of thinking is not very abundant. Because if it is, we can Write our Hobby off as History.
Be Safe Ya’ll & Give A Damn :Wally

Wally, I agree on some points with you, but then I disagree on some of the others. As far as I can remember, all the major incidents involving serious exotic envenomations from private keepers within the last six years or so have all been males between the ages of 25-50 with the exception of the women who was fatally bitten by her Bothrops alternatus. There is only one case of a minor being envenomated (That I am aware of anyways) by an exotic species, and this happened in the state of PA a few years back. The reason why these became so high profile and made widespread media attention is due to lack of people having a close source of antivenom or having it at all, and it is a mad dash to save their lives. Many of these "Dangerous animal bans" have been implemented from many other exotic species that have caused major headlines with an incident. (Tiger attacks, escapes, etc)
While some of the blame falls on dealers, the majority of it falls on keepers who get into the hobby and really do not have plan in place incase of an envenomation. While Chuck, Ernie, and Jeff at MDFR Antivenom unit do a helluva job, you cannot have keepers all across the US relying on them for antivenom, as they can't be everywhere at onetime. This website has always had a nice history of trolls, so I wouldn’t necessarily get all wound up every time someone comes here spewing some story that is probably all nonsense anyways.

I agree with Joe.
It is not very likely that a reptile dealer would sell a Bushmaster to a 14 year old, even if the 14 year old was standing there with cash money.
Most of the venomous dealers I have met at shows are very concerned for the venomous hobby, and most try to make sure that someone purchasing venomous snakes is of legal age and has the ability / knowledge to safely keep the animal.
Best Regards JohnZ

i don't think it's realistic to say that most dealers/breeders are careless with whom they sale to, because they lose money if all is banned. i'm sure some are in it for the short term to make a few bucks, but most know it's dumb to be reckless.
people forget to place blame on adults who buy this stuff, realize that they don't really care about snakes and then sell it off to whomever just to make their money back.
there are a lot of regular people who'll sell anything to anyone.

"I've hung out at the San Antonio show and watched dealers conduct business. I have seen them sell Atrox and such to ( I felt) idiot adults but I have never seen them sell a hot to a kid. No way."
You should go to a Hamburg show sometime. You'll see a vendor sell to a young kid, I guarantee. It's been one of my pet peeves with some of the vendors, especially some of the "popular" and "responsible" ones. I'm sure Al can agree with me here. I used to drop names of the yahoos, but people didn't like it, and it didn't make a damn bit of difference. Nothing changes the mind of someone with dollar signs in their eyes.
