how could you not document such an important animal or let it die...that is what mentors are for...someone should have been force feeding it...they are so few and far between....it is like the savanna place...i hate to see animals go there, because they have no interest in breeding. they have an albino canebrake, hypo cottonmouth and i just learned they may have recieved two wild caught albino cottonmouths this year...that kinda made me sick,to say the least. GA is so screwed up with it's legistration on reptiles,it is one big snake infested area, but it is the line between Fl ssp and eastern. not to say i'm not into saving our beloved snakes.but banning all... i get occatee looking corns from any coastal are in SC, heck half came from keith taylor out of cayce,sc. half the corns i find look like occatees the other like what some call red rats, as if there may be a differance. after breeding local corns for some years i think it is all just survival mode. sometimes the redder ones thrive sometimes the duller ones, alot has to be luck, for i have found both within yards of each other on numerous occasions. on corn nights(as i like to call them)i have found numerous corns of both various on stretchs with as many as six or seven animals. never do you find only one color morph, always about 50/50...i do believe that rules must be put in place to preserve our natives, but albinos don't count. 99% would die in nature, and they are like our domestics. only available cause we care....and love their beauty!!!

Why does that make you sick? Because they aren't bred or sold to someone who will breed them and make big bucks? I actually find that refreshing. They have a good home there and that's all that's really needed to be said.

I'd be interested to know where this snake came from too. Just finding a copperhead period in Abilene is tough enough.
Was this in the Fort Phantom area, or perhaps actually outside of Abilene such as Cross Plains or Baird? I've seen a few strange copperheads come out of that area. Was the snake preserved in a collection, maybe in Dr. Lee's menagerie over at ACU?

The only TRUE albino I have seen (and my table was next to mikes when he had the animal) was the albino female osage at the ST louis zoo, which from what I understand was bred repeatedly to male osages and never took. It happens sometimes, rarely with coppers, but sometimes they dont take, ever. A gent in NC produced an aberrant several years ago that was smokin and I know of both true melanistics (mike had a nice one of those, woulda got it if it wasnt venomoid) coming out of small pops around jordan lake NC and all along the blue ridge mountains of VA. I have seen full stripes from louisiana, SC, TX, and GA, and osages from missouri. There are lots of these animals out there, the key, knowing who has them.Spotted and full spotted and full zigzags (like vipera) have also been observed. BTW, the venomoid male melanistic mike had was also picked up by a gent who bought 20 adult females WC,from another vendor at the show. just something I observed, so I am sure some poor dedicated souls are working on it.my .2
