Hello all. New to herping here. My question: Whenever I see an ad for a snake for sale, here's what I see: 1.3.0 king cobra for sale, or 0.4.0 corn snake, or 0.0.2 gaboon for sale. What is the deal with the numbers? What do they mean? Forgive my ignorance...you were once a newb too! Thanks.

Well the numbers means what sex the animals are. The 1.3.0 means its one unknown sex, 3 males, and 0 females. The 0.4.0 are 4 males, and the 0.0.2 gaboon means 2 females. Herping is (in my opinion) one of the best things i ever gotten into. Glad you are invloved with this now. You may want to fill out your profile, like most of the members, but thats up to you. Most people will get to tell you. Have fun and be safe,
MIke
P.S hope the number system makes sense. If i made any mistakes or if its confusing im sure someone else would explain it in a better way.

Spikey got it right. The first number represents males, the second, females. If there is a third number, it refers to animals that have not had their sex determined, which usually means they are very young, though not necessarily. To answer the obvious question, yes, babies can be sexed, but some are so small that they may be injured in the process.

Why is it males , females, unknown? Just remember that the original scientists that set up these systems were sexist males, so of course males come first ;0).
