I live in NC just north of Raleigh. I have been trying to locate a good area close to home where I can photograph some Cottons in their natural habitat. I have fished all over the state and have herped from the coast back to Raleigh and have never seen a Cotton in the wild! I have herped the Neuse and Tar River both...no luck...just a few Coppers here and there. Anyone who can point me in the right direction? I have been told that Kerr Lake has a thriving population but have not located any there either. I am on the verge of giving up the hunt. Any ideas would be a help.

Go hiking in Umstead park. One of the mechanics that I work with hikes there every weekend and told me about all the cottons and copperheads that he spotted there.

I found a range map with vouchered county occurences (below). I was surprised to hear they got as far west as Wake, but according to the map they do (and also one more county over)! I find it interesting that you have not come across any cottons, but then again in my experience a site either has no cottons or it has cottons out the ying-yang (that is a technical term).
