I havent been around for a while but 10 mins on this site and I was shocked and I thought the best place to tell everyone about it is here,
Live feeding of mice to Iguanas, Puff Adders, Tarantulas, and even live mice in with some pirahnas, yes its what they do but seeing this myself has made me wonder what people think of us feeding our reps. I use F/T rats etc but this stuff is sickening, mishandling of snakes, improper feeding equipment and general incompetance here is the address to the videos please tell me what you think,
regard,kieron,
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDr5ztzkiB4
that is the link i went in on and then found all the mouse versus tarantula etc videos,

I went to the link and only saw Al's excellent footage of the puff taking a small quail off of hemostats. Perhaps I missed something. Since you were criticizing the footage of live prey being fed (which I agree with your comments) you might also reconsider the picture you have on your profile. Hand feeding a dead rodent to a boa? That's not the brightest thing I've ever seen and something I would strongly folks to not attempt; we have to be just as responsible with non venomous herps as we are with venomous.

I assume he's talking about the "related" videos that come up in the section to the lower right of the main video.
I'm undecided myself. I occasionally feed live, and have even video taped it once or twice, but I wouldn't post those videos just because of the impression they would leave with warm-and-fuzzy lovers. That's what happens in the wild 1,000,000,000 times a day, so I don't have a moral issue with it at all. But I also don't expect the general public to be able to grasp that thought. I feed F/T or P/K because it's safer for my snakes.
You'll also find, if you start following the "related" videos and see were they go, that there are at least as many videos of people actively torturing and killing wild snakes for no reason other that their own entertainment.
I'm still trying to imagine the reaction if I posted a video of me beating a rabbit to death with a stick, cutting it's head off with a shovel and then dragging the body behind a 4-wheeler... I feel pretty confident that I would end up in jail...if the torch weilding townspeople didn't string me up first...

Most of the vidios I seen were from Al and I see nothing wrong with them personally. I enjoy watching Als vidios.
Most of the others didn't seem that bad not sure what you we're going after here.
I would say the guy catching the adder could have used a bigger stick. You are right to say people should use proper tools and take pre caution.
My thought's but I'm an amiture hot keeper so may not mean much.
As far as Al and his videos keep posting there excellent and educational.

I feed some of my tarantulas live mice and anoles. With them you really have too. The won't eat dead (defrosted) prey. They will site right next to the prey until it moves, then they pounce. I've tried defrosted rodents for my T. blondi before and she'll bite it, but more as defensive bite and won't take it off the tongs. I think they can sense its a little bigger than just the prey and see it as a threat.
Anyway, how is this any different than an animal planet film crew filming a croc or lion take down a zebra?

I see nothing wrong with the videos that anybody puts out for viewing. Just as long as they are professional.. I see nothing wrong with recording a live feeding.. It is very interesting to see how rodents react to a bite. I feed all of my snakes live rodents. The gaboons love it. I have been using live rodents for years upon years with no troubles. I dont recommend live animals with the bigger boids, that goes without saying. I am all for live rodents. Bryan

I also try feeding live to my rattlesnakes. At least once in a while. The venom helps them digest the food. So if they're fed F/T all the time it's not exactly so good for them. I agree it's a good practice to stunt the rodent, so it doesn't cause any injury to the snake. However I feed chickens to my snakes (I don't even stunt them) and I find it more humane if the snake kills it - I don't know how to kill them fast and don't have the stomach for it anyways...I'd prefer the snake doing the job for me. As far as my boids and non-venomous they are fed F/T out of convenience. I kill the rats for my boas if I cannot get frozen, just so it's safe, but I think the rat suffers just as much when I kill it as it would if the snake did the job. I also agree on the tarantulas...they are not interested in dead.
The only thing I do not understand, why would anyone feed an iguana pinky mice??? Iguanas eat veggies only.
Hey Trey, nice to see you here. Well at least we can still keep the natives. I was about to get out of keeping venomous completely when the law came to effect and sold bunch of my natives too. But I guess I cannot live without them :)
Now I'm mad at myself. Especially for selling the massasaugas. So I'm planning to get bunch of natives this year.

Remember the nature of the Animals we Keep, they are Predators, they Kill for their Food, and these are the things we cannot avoid. If we aren’t willing to live with the Fact that we are Keeping Animals that have to Kill for their Food, we shouldn’t be in this Hobby. I have Kept many Snakes in my Life and know that not all Snakes will accept F/T Mice&Rats, so either we learn to live with it, or give up our Charges.
I also enjoy watching Al’s Videos, they are somewhat Educational and do Teach some up and coming Keepers “GOOD” Safety Rules to follow.
Keep up the good Home Movies Al, they are very Entertaining.

Why do you feel it isn't good for the snake? Just because it is F/T doesn't mean the isn't injecting it's venom.
