Some South Georgia towns like Fitzgerald should be commended for stopping their rattlesnake roundups, and turning the event into a Wild Chicken Festival. These folks care about conservation and are doing a great thing educating the public, and entertaining their town folks with an interesting event.
I plan to do what I can to promote the Fitzgerald Wild Chicken Festival, which will be on March 17. My long time friend Okeefenokee Joe will be there also to sind his songs and help educate folks about snakes.
On the other hand, there are still two small South Georgia towns called Wigham and Claxton where rattlesnake roundups are still going on. It is really ashamed that the rednecks who live in these towns continue to do this.
Take a look at the News item I posted below titled:
"Rattlesnake roundup raises money, controversy"
I, for one, will never spend any money to support these towns. I will not buy gasoline while driving through them. I will not stay in their hotels. I will not eat in their restaraunts. And I will never again buy a Claxton Fruit Cake for a Christmas gift!
I attended school with Bill Claxton, and he was a friend, but sorry Bill, since your family employes many of the folks in Claxton, and these rednecks still continue to have rattlesnake roundups, I intend to boycott Claxton Fruit Cakes until your town shows some enlightenment and stops the roundups, and creates something like Fitzgerald has.
I urge the other herpers here to never buy one of the Claxton Fruit Cakes again, and to let your store managers and the Claxton Fruit Cake Company know just why!
Best Regards JohnZ

A red neck roundup is a great idea. The only problem is roundups are usually 2 days long.A redneck roundup may take say a decade or so!!!

I support the redneck roundup and definitely the ban on anything Claxton or Wigham. If education is available, then ignorance becomes a choice, and chosen ignorance is the definition of a redneck!!

Charles, you are exactly right.. There are alot of Ignorant people out there, that only knows how to follow the leader instead of thinking for themselves that " this snake round-up is stupid, and hurts the snake population and increases the rodent population 10 fold" Man what DUMB ASSES!!!!! I mean we all know how fast rodents/rabbits can breed.. Take away one of their main predators and you have way more rodents, but even though you can explain that to them till your blue in the face, they are like " yeah but I still hate and will kill any snake I see" MAN that URKS me to no end... Now this redneck bashin may be gettin a little outa hand. I think you may be referrin to "ignorant rednecks" or possibly even "white trash". As a hardworkin, God fearin man with a truck and a huntin dawg (redneck?), I love rattlesnakes and resent being stereotyped. Just because a man is a little red under the collar shouldn't make him the target of such disdain. LOL!!
