I'm just wondering are there any plans by any herpetological organizations in the USA to actively oppose and campaign to have these ignorant and barbaric events of blatant cruelty outlawed?
Maybe I'm missing something being from the UK and all but in this day and age of conservation awareness and protection against the cruelty of ALL animals (not just society's misconseption that only cute and cuddly animals are worth caring for)..........
I'm ranting. Sorry.
Cant help feeling appaled by this....

We actively oppose ALL rattlesnake roundups. We are just successfull at removing a few at a time. For example - see the Fitzgerald Wild Chicken festival banner at the top.

Mark, progress is being made. In the state of Georgia, there are now only two rattlesnake roundups, while 25 years ago, there were 10 or 11.

It's also very difficult to do anything about an activity that is legal. The only thing we can do is educate.
I dislike roundups very much, I would like to see them end, however habitat destruction and roadkills take far more of them and are probably a lot more worthy of our attention right now. The only thing is, fighting habitat destruction isn't easy.
Amazingly, killing an animal is one of the things helping the rattlesnakes most of all. What do I mean? Deer Hunters. Deer hunters accomplish far more in the way of habitat preservation than ANY of us could accomplish any other way. Every time I drive by a hunt club of several hundred acres laced with POSTED, NO TRESPASSING signs on it I know that's several hundred acres of habitat being preserved.
Remember, managing for quail/turkey/deer is also managing for diamondbacks. One way we can surreptitiously help the diamondback is to not give our hunter friends any grief (are you listening PETA? HSUS? ... even if you are I doubt you will pay attention)
Just some random thoughts...

Except that it's going to be hard to rally support for snake habitat preservation while the roudups are perpetuating the feeling that killing thousands of snakes is a GOOD thing...
Yes, any habitat preservation benefits snakes and is otherwise generally a good idea, but it'll be alot easier if we can get people to see that ALL the animals there are worth preserving, not just the C&F's. Somehow I don't see rattlesnake hat-bands helping to get that point across...

Some good points.......thankyou Chad and Larry.
I certainly agree with you that more education is needed to teach people that all animals have the right to exsist along side us and be free from persecution.
All these round-ups do is encourage ignorance and it worries me when I see the FEAR and HATRED of snakes being passed on to the younger generation......
Regards,
Mark.

Do they sell rattlesnakes at the roundups? Seems like a good place to get a snake if they do. Especially if they have thousands of pounds of them coming in.

Chuck, while it might seem that a roundup would be a good place to "get a rattlesnake" as you put it, and while there are probably some nitwhits there who would sell you one, what you have to realize is that the rattlesnakes have been collected by pouring gasoline through a long tube to the bottom of a Gopher Tortiose burrow. The gasoline fumes drive a rattlesnake to the surface to be captured, but they also damage the snakes lungs. This usually will cause the snake to die within a couple of weeks from respiritory infections. The gasoline also can kill slower moving animals in the burrow like the tortioses, frogs, and insect that use these burrows for their homes. It is a very damaging way to collect snakes.
Hope this helps.
