John, arent Gopher Tortoises (Gopherus polyphemus) under Federal Protection? If this is the case, could they not Fine or Jail the Twits that are Gassing these Burrows? Also, pumping Gas into the ground could be construed as Environmental Destruction, could it not?
It strikes me funny how the Laws that be, ignore this and just let it keep going on. Maybe one day these Twits will be held accountable for the destruction they have caused.

While that is true Wally, you have to take into account that the local game wardens who live down there in those areas have familys who go the the same schools and churches and stores as the folks who are gassing the burrows, and are possibly related to them, so they have the tendency to look the other way.
Also, the gassing is going on way out in the country and on private lands where it is very unlikely that the folks would get caught in the first place.
That it the unfortunate state of affairs in towns like that. The only hope is in educating the children, as the older folks are beyone being changed. That is why educational talks to school groups can play such an important role in the future.
If towns like Fitzgerald can change their ways and create a positive social event, so can these other towns. For now, I say we continue to boycott the Claxton Fruit Cakes, which is a multi million dollar business in that town, and continue to do so until they start getting the message. It is not much, but it might help since they are the major employer in Claxton.
Best Regards JohnZ

OH!
I guess I had heard that before about gasoline but it would never occur to me to dump gas on the ground let alone down a hole in the ground. It must contaminate groundwater. Never saw a gopher tortoise, wild I mean. And have only seen one wild rattlesnake, a baby pygmy rattlesnake on a road in Florida.
Actually, when I walk thru woods where I would expect to see or hear a lot of wild things I usually hear nothing at all, no birds, nothing. And nothing else is moving, no squirrels or anything. And streams are kinda grey all over the bottom instead of green or brown, no snails, no minnows, no water striders, no dragonflies, nothing. Really strange.
