Shawn, I see several things wrong here.
First, no one here knows who you mean by "the guy."
Second, are these snakes Legal to own where you live?
Third, anyone who will not tell you a price in advance is dishonest.
Forth, do you have anti-venom for these very dangerous snakes? Especially the Cobras, Sawscaled Viper, Gaboon, and Russels Viper?
Fifth, do you have any experince and training in keeping these very dangerous snakes? Have you worked with a mentor?
If you have to ask, then you should not purchase these snakes.
Go look if you want, but it does not sound like the kind of snakes you should be keeping.
Hope this helps.

I would love to see a Russell's Viper and see how acts when it sees its mouse or rat, how it strikes, how long the mouse or rat takes to die and how it acts as it dies, and whether it eats in front of people or only in private. I think they look beautiful in pictures. I know some can cause your pituitary to hemorrhage if they bite you. That would sure put a kink in your day! I also think it would be good to see his cobras and how each acts compared to the others. I think it would be worth going to see the snakes. With someone with you.

JohnZ,first of all yes I do have experience with Hots, but no I do not posess any anti-venom.
second I only called this guy, and he called me back on my cell, I could barely hear him so I gave him my home number, he tryed to call but I did not get to phone quick enough, and when I tryed to call back his number was busy. So I will try again... I do not have any money to buy any of these snakes, and my wife would not let me have any exotics right now anyways.. (I can have local hots...Rattlers,Copper,Cottons) But I still want to see these in person...
my state is so screwed up, I called the big wig of the states DNR and he said absolutely no Venomous is allowed to be kept in the state and there is no permits you can get to over rule this and there is no permits that you can get to allow you to go out and catch in the state (he said that there is no hunting season open to allow a person to go out and collect, and since there is no season then that means the season is closed for 24/7/365 meaning it is illegal to catch), but my local DNR officer does not care and has watched me go on collecting sprees, but he can not show me in writing what his superior has told me, and the way I see it if they can not prove or show it in writing then it is not true and they are just trying to throw their athority around by thinking if we called then we have no clue how the laws work...??? So with that note, I am very picky on who I let know what I am doing or what types of reps/animals I have..I do have experience and have kept/are keeping some things, but I also watch my back carefully...
I am still learning though... I am planning on moving to a state that still allows Hots and exotics, but I must finish some more College courses to where I can transfer to a College that teaches Herpetology.. But that is in the future, so for now I just keep my mouth shut and study/read/and watch my collection in hopes to some day be able to have a public collection where I and some other (collected in time) friends can teach the public about these creatures and help keep these animals available to the World to look at and admire.. West Virginia:
Native Venomous: No permit required
Exotic Venomous: No permit required
Protected native venomous: None
West Virginia Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife
PO Box 67
Elkins, WV 26241-0067
from Pullianspetcenter.com
It is never a good plan to go anywhere online and admit to breaking the law. This and every other forum is frequented by Law Enforcement officers who are looking for folks who are breaking the laws.
Fortunately, from what is available at John's site - it looks as though you are not breaking the law regarding venomous snakes even if you thought you might be.
I recommend that you contact the address for WV DNR (above) and get the real answers instead of relying on individual agents who may not have your best interests at heart.

I've talked to a couple DNR officers about this subject. As far as WV laws go you have to be permitted to breed, buy, sell or trade any native wildlife including snakes. I don't know about just keeping them, but I believe your supposed to be permitted. There currently aren't any laws on exotics. They've been trying to pass a law regulating exotic animals, and pretty much banning all hots, but it didn't pass this year. They're going to try and pass it again next year though. So if it's not a timber or a N. copperhead you should be ok legally for now. I've talked to the guy your referring to a couple times, I've never gone to look at his snakes though.

I know the current written laws make no distinction between venomous and non-venomous reptiles. So having an unpermitted native rattlesnake should be the same penalty as having an unpermitted black rat snake. The only difference is the state would probably issue you a permit for a black rat whereas they refuse to do so for any venomous.

I never actually said I was breaking any laws.. What I said is if I do or did have anything hot, I do not go bragging about it... No one needs to know what I or anybody has in their collection.. PERIOD.. But I have caught and handled my share of Hots...That is all, and yes you should not rely on anybodys website either..And I said I talked to the main man personally in charge of all permits..., but he had no written documents to prove what he had told me..

Just to clarify some things that may have been misunderstood...First, the WV State Code (what is written down in the law books) requires permits for any animal or rep that could live indigenously in WV. Second, they have no codes on any exotics. Third, you must however obtain a permit to bring any animal or reptile into state lines. Fourth, I do not talk about what I have because I have had the unfortunate experience of knowing people that have had whole collections stolen and/or killed. Therefore, if nobody but who needs to know what I have knows, it protects my collection from people like that. Fifth, I am in full leagal status until they change the laws...and then three things will happen...I will be grandfathered in, I will get the new requirements or I will move to a state that is friendlier to rep. lovers.
Lastly, no you cannot trust what one person says or does, you must check the actual written law. This goes for anything. An example of this is I once knew of a pet store selling rough green snakes (which is illegal to keep because of being indigenious) and they swore up and down you could keep them...So make sure you all look up your individual state codes.

I think the import permit applies only to natives. I've looked at the law book and gone over it with a DNR Law Enforcement Officer and he said currently there aren't permits required for importation of nonnative species, because under the definition they aren't considered wildlife. The failed bill SB384 would have made permits required for people who import, breed, or sell nonnative animals.
