Hi all,
I have just finished my set up for my albolabris and to create a humid environment I am placing a large cat litter tray on top of a heat mat underneath the branches.
My female is gravid and to prevent the little ones from drowning when they are born I thought rather than just water in the litter tray i'd make a bog with water and sphagnum moss. Does anybody know, will it harm the vipers if they were to drink from the water moss mixture?
Thanks,
Al

I would think not. I used to keep Micrurus fulvius on a substrate of pure sphagnum, with a large water bowl in the cage. On occasion, moss would get in the water. Never had any problems.
One thing you might do (if you're still worried) is keep the moss damp enough to maintain high humidity without there being sufficient water in the container for the snakes to drink from.

i have done something similar with some of my turtles and they turned out great, it shouldn't harm your vipers.

Alan, the sphagnum moss will release tannic, carbonic, and humic acids into the water as if breaks down.
This will make the water more acidic, but that is actually a good thing, as acidic water will help kill bacteria, parasites, and viruses.
This is why the early settlers around the okeefenokee swamp drank the peat stained waters, and rarely suffered water borne diseases or illnesses.
