I found a dead baby snake in my pool in northern va. It has reddish (copper) geometric pattern on top and a white belly with black squares on it. Is this a copperhead? How do I erradicate the mother and other babies though I do not know where the nest is...

Erradicate?
Wouldn't it be more humane to call your local animal welfare department, have them remove the snakes if your worried about any danger to yourself and your family?

A belly with black rectangles sounds like it could also be a nonvenomous cornsnake. A copperhead will have facial heat sensing pits located between the eyes and nostril, a vertical pupil (like a cat), and a single row of scales after its vent or anus on its underside. If it is a small snake also look for a yellow tail tip - a copperhead will have this - a corn will not.

I live in Northern Va and would be happy to remove any snakes you may find and relocate them. Please do not attempt to kill them. If they are indeed copperheads getting close to them could put you in trouble.
BTW, considering that Norther Copperheads give birth in the fall, I seriously doubt that what you found was a newborn from this year. I wouldnt worry about a nest.
You can reach me at jgeffert@louisberger.com and I will be happy to assist.
BTW, your discription sounds like either a copperhead or cornsnake. If you could snap a picture of it we could easily confirm.
Take care,
Jeremy

It could be a copperhead, from that description. It could also be a northern water snake. They are completely harmless and probably the snake most often mistaken for a copperhead. They have round pupils and may have alternating black rectagles (usually part of one belly scale) on their bellies.
A picture would be very helpful.

sounds more like a corn snake...alot of people here in SC kill corns thinking they are coppers....corns eat mice, moles and shrews......they are very good for the enviroment and killing them will for sure bring more vermom to your property....

Jsargent,
In Northern Va Cornsnakes are rare and copperheads are extreamly common so chances are it is a copperhead or perhaps a Nerodia.
As for cornsnakes being benificial, that can be said for all snakes. Copperheads are no exception.

Reddish geometric patterns? White belly with black squares? Sounds like an Eastern Milksnake. Harmless. In fact, if you don't like snakes, the Milksnake is one to have around. It eats other snakes, including venomous snakes.
