"Broadley & Baldwin (2006) surveyed morphological anad pattern variation in Aspidelaps in southern African. It was noted that the supposedly distinctive head coloration differences between Aspidelaps lubricus infuscatus and A.l. cowlesi are not in fact diagnostic for the populations concerned. Accordingly, A.l. infuscatus is a synonym of A.l. cowlesi. Additionally, the authors also identified a differentiated from of A.l. lubricus, disitnguished by higher ventral and subcaudal scale counts, from northwestern South Africa and southwestern Namibia, which may represent an udnescribed taxon."
Extracted from Wolfgang Wuster's awesome site!
I had always suspected that A.l.cowlesi was not distinct from infuscatus and it looks like i am not the only one. Atleast certin dealers can no longer attempt to pawn off A.l.infuscatus as cowlesi and sky rocket the price tag anymore.
As for the A.l.lubricus, that would be very interesting. However, I belive it may be suspect. I had a gigantic intergrade female which looked pure lubricus. She had a higher subcaudal count then regular lubricus as well though I never did a ventral check.
I know these two forms intergrade naturaly in the northwestern part of there range (according to a good source who regulary finds Aspidelaps in the wild) so I suspect that is what was found. On the same note I am not one to question Dr Broadley lightly. It will be interesting to see if any further studies are done.
Hopefully DNA studies will be performed in teh future. Making such judgements by scale count alone seems to be an inacurate science.
Anyway, just a little somthing for all of my fellow Taxonomy junkies ^^
Adios,
Jeremy
P.S The female I mentioned was the result of a breeding from a verified A.l.lubricus and A.l.infuscatus, not a WC.

Hi Marty,
I had 1.1 A.l.lubricus and 2.2 A.l.infuscatus but have since passed them on for I no longer can keep venomous safely. I started developing an alergic reaction, directly as a result from keeping 2.2 Naja pallida and decided not to temp fate.
I have in the past sucsessfully bred my A.l.lubricus.
Let me know if I can help in anyway. My past animals went to a guy who has fallen under the radar and I do not know if he has had any luck. The only other source I know was Diamond breeder reptiles based on CB specimens they have offered over the years.
Take care,
Jeremy
